Just got done reading all 17 pages of the engine info sticky- great info but from a good while back. I have a '77 2f that I need to do a budget rebuild on. Where is the best place to get a rebuild kit? Probably just do gaskets, seals, bearings, rings, and oil pump...maybe pistons... maybe more depends on $$$.

Seems like "Northern" was what Mark and Mace were recommending in the thread...anyone got any contact info?

Also love to hear any pointers folks have. I've done a couple SBC and a big block Caddy 500 but this will be my 1st 2f. And for those of you that have rebuilt yours, what do I need to look out for? What would you have done differently?

Thanks in Advance,
Chris

2f's last so long that is why so few people rebuild them. Most of us want to keep the f series engines, and quite a few rebuild them. Getting a used 2f is a gamble unless you can drive it before it is removed. You will get some good feedback from those have done it.

MAF offers a kit. Not sure if engnbldr.com offers one.

You can get a stock gasket set from Toyota, best kit to use anyway. Cruiser Dan, your local Toyota Dealer, Cruiser Outfitters any of them can get you the gasket set. Then go to a machine shop for the rest of the parts. You might as well machine everything while it is a part. Machining should run 600-1000 dollars

Some people used to buy kits from a company called Pacific Lift. A Fork lift company but don't know much about them.

Biggest heads up I was given was on the timing plate. The oiler needs to be pointed at the gear. Not be tightened down such that it is pushing the plate away (poking out the back) from the block and then staked down. Some people have brazzed this as well.

When you order your gasket set get some of the toyota gasket maker silicone stuff for the oil pan.

MAF, SOR, sell them...

Where are you ?

This is the guy who does MAFs machining and 2F rebuilds:

Martin Davidson's Automotive Machine Shop (Martin Davidson)
18410 Gault Street
Reseda, California 91335
(818)705-2441

He doesn't sell "kits" that I know of, but he might sell you what you need. I believe he stocks MAFs engine rebuild parts inventory, too.

Great guy, btw. Worth a call.

Also, I'd call Mark at Markoffroad.net - again, he does not have a "kit" that I know of, but he may have what you need or point you in the right direction. :) 818-953-9230

If you have the time, why not pull it apart and see what you actually need before getting everything.

When I built my 2FE, I ended up putting the short block back together with little more than new gaskets, new rings and a quick honing.

Thanks for all the info, keep it comin'- definately a good tip on the oiler.

I got the block cheap, already disassembled, don't really know the history beyond "The previous owner said it spun a bearing." My plan is to go through it and check it out as best I can. I'll replace/machine what's needs to be done, have the rotating assembly balanced and go with it.

The engine thread had me wanting to mix and match heads/blocks/flywheels/valvetrain and do a bunch of stuff to create a screaming super 2f- but then I was reminded that this is basically a tractor motor.

Thanks again,

PS- I'm in Norfolk VA

If you're having a machine shop do work on the block, have the machine shop order the rebuild "kit". A good shop knows where to get the parts, gets them at a better price, and the parts will fit.
I have rebuilt my 2F, and that's how I did it.

I would suggest this also. Won't cost you anymore yet he will make some margins on the parts & be much more inclined to work with you. Win-win for both parties.
