So I was giving the old girl the once over and noticed that I needed to top off the oil. When I did I heard that oil splattering on the garage floor sound. There was just a little bit that looked like it was running out of the seam around the pan. Upon further inspection I realized that when I poured the oil in it was actually leaking out from around the valve cover between the bolt on the left and the line from the air rail. My question is how bad is this? Is it probably the gasket for the valve cover? Thanks.

It's probably just the gasket on the valve cover...take it off and have a look.

Gasket

I would wipe it as clean as possible, replicate your pouring and pay close attention to where it is leaking. If it's coming from beneath the valve cover, the gasket is an easy replacement. Just clean up all the mating surfaces while you're in there so it doesn't end up leaking again.

Some folks would probably try tightening their VC bolts first. I would just replace the gasket. It's an excuse to poke around in there.

If you don't remember what condition your gasket looked to be in, it's more than likely time to pull the VC and relash the valves anyways.;)

So essentially someone untorqued and then retorqued that head bolt that is also landing a hand on the bracket. Hooked-up to a saginaw I assume. That is the culprit. Never heard of this issue with a stock set-up....

It looks like that bracket is leaning in on the valve cover. The rest is just interesting conversation.....like does it run hot.

What you talkin bout Willis?, We are talkin a leaking valve cover gasket.

Cruiserloser is talking about the new looking power steering pump bracket that is tight against the valve cover itself. It looks like they are rubbing in the picture. This may be what is causing the leak.

OH, I see it now, sorry Cruiserlover, just call me slow.;)

Didnt mean to be so vague about the head/running hot. It looks like there is plenty of thread left for that head bolt with the extra bracket work that it is doing. On the F engines, that same head bolt fasten's an air cleaner bracket to the head. You have to remove that bolt if you want to take off the bracket (on the F). The head needs to be torqued in a sequence and if you take that one-bolt out, it might throw off the torque for the head. Might not, but it is easy to just want to hand tighten that thing back down.
