I HAVE A 78 FJ40 WITH A 2F THAT HAS A BAD ROD BEARING AND A CHEWED UP CRANK.MY QUESTION IS CAN I REMOVE THE CRANK "WITHOUT" PULLING THE ENGINE. I HAVE NEVER REBUILT ENGINE BEFORE , SO THIS MAY BE A STUPID QUESTION.

You can swap the rod bearings out. I have done that. Don't think you can do the crank without pulling the engine. Are you sure the crank is chewed up and its not just bearing material on the crank?

WHEN I PULLED THE THE OIL PAN OFF I FOUND A PIECE OF BEARING 1 INCH LONG AND THE THICKNESS OF PIECE PAPER. THE CRANK HAS SOME MINOR GROOVES IN IT. I INSTALLED A NEW STD BEARING JUST TO SEE IF THAT WOULD FIX IT, THAT DIDN'T WORK BUT DID QUITE IT DOWN. DO YOU THINK I COULD INSTALL THE NEXT "OVERSIZE" OR "UNDERSIZE" , I'M NOT SURE WHICH WAY IT GO'ES , AND TRY TO WEAR IT IN OR WILL IT JUST CHEW IT UP. I'M TRYING NOT TO PULL THE ENGINE , IF I HAVE TO THEN I MIGHT AS WELL DROP IN A USED ONE , SO I CAN GET MY 40 RUNNING DOWN THE ROAD .

We took emeory cloth and and cleaned the bearing material off the crank and replaced the rod bearings. However, if you crank actually has grooves in it, Then you need to to do more and take the crank out. I see you are in Westminster. There is a big cruiser community here and even a few shops that will work on your engine depending on whats wrong. Give us more information on what happened.

By the way, you can get parts from Wetsren Engine, but they may recommend John Napier, buy the parts from them, but do not use John Napier.

If you join TLCA you can get a 25% discount on parts at Mountain states Toyota. That 25% will pay foritself in gaskets alone. Once you get it running, members of the Rising Sun club get 20% at Stevinson and Burt.

By the way newbie, take the caps off. Caps mean your SHOUTING. :D

Good luck, we are here to help.

If you pull the tranny too you can pull the crank. Piece of cake actually.

But honestly, It will be easier to pull the motor and rebuild the whole thing, there is a reason it blew a rod bearing. Oil pump. clog in the oiling passageways etc..

mace is correct, it is only a couple more hours to pull the whole engine/tranny, get a cherry picker and get that thing out so you can really look into it. Clean it all off so when you put it back in you can see leaks and other issues. Time to roll up the sleeves and get dirty, you will thank yourself later :)

Sounds like you need to have the crank machined if it is still good. While you are down there you might as well have the rest of the motor looked at (head, block, manifolds, pistons, cam atc.) Also, however much you plan on spending go ahead and ad at least 50% to that. I just got in to the same situation and after deciding it was to much work and money it was cheaper to just swap in a good running 2F. I spun a bearing and when I took my crank to the machine shop it was to far gone to be salvaged. You may be able to just replace the bearings but that is a temp fix and you are not really solving the real problem as mace stated.

I was lucky because I siezed my engine while idleing in my garage. The oil pump was not running because the dizzy was not all the way down, very little stress on the engine. Two rod bearings were damages and there was bearing material on the crank. The only reason I got away with not pulling the engine was because when we cleaned the bearing material off the crank, it was undamaged. If the crank has any damage, it needs to be removed and corrected, or as the guys state above, it is a temporary fix. Read temporary as in it will sieze again soon. You need smooth surfaces with lots of oil to keep things running at high speed.

Also, one of the more recent copies of Toyota Trails had an in depth look at rod bearings and causes of "bad bearings". I woul look at that article for guiance and tips. I think Mark Whately wrote it.

Hey guy's thanks for the input , I need to just quit thinking about it and get busy , pull the motor and fix the crank , or drop in a good used one . Thanks for the info about Western Engine , and about "John Napier" , I had read about him in this section before I made this post , don't even want to mess with him . I'll keep you up to date as to what I decide do .
