Yes, but it can also sound like a "tick". It gets louder the more throttle you give it.

Pre-ignition sounds like a knock or rattle, depending on severity.

Lots of things can make a knocking sound: Rod bearings, cam gear, wrist pins and piston slap. Bad bearings are usually associated with low oil pressure. You can sometimes tell which bearing is bad as it will get quiet when you pull the spark plug wire.

Noises are hard to diagnose over the net. You might take it to someone who knows what these various things sound like.
 
Thanks for your help. This is definately not a tick kind of noise. I have heard that before with an exhause leak. Today I went out and got the plastigage and will check clearances for the rod/main bearings. If that checks out good, then I will take a look at the cam gear. Somewhere along that path, I bet I will find my problem. This engine only has about 60K on the clock. Thanks again.
 
Mine (2F) developed a knock after some serious overheating - it turned out to be piston slap on no 4 piston and broken rings
