2F carb problems

My '78 FJ40 has been running pretty well lately, which is kind of surprising if you knew the history of this engine/truck. But last week I drove up the coast on the highway for about 45 minutes and when I pulled over the truck was idling pretty high. Tapping on the throttle does nothing to decrease it. The carb was rebuilt about 2 years ago and has run really well ever since. What would cause the idle to suddenly increase like this?

Humorous Content: when I pulled the air filter cover off to check things out, I found a squirrel's stash from last winter; a fistful of nuts in my air filter.

RedGreen do you have a choke that possibly got stuck pulled out or just broke while being pulled. Did anyone else drive your car recently.

Carb Problem

If your carb float gets stuck in the down position, the bowl can overfill and dump more fuel into the intake manifold. Look at the window in the front of the carb bowl, especially when it is idling fast. The fuel level in the window should be in the middle of the glass. If you don't see the level in the glass, the level is either below or above the window.

Check for resistance in the mechanical linkage by putting your foot UNDER the gas pedal and trying to lift up on the pedal. Just a hunch.

I checked the choke and it is not stuck, and no one else has driven my truck. I played with the choke and the throttle linkage under the hood but didn't get the idle to come back down. I'll check the fuel level window and the linkage under the gas pedal this evening.
