Hey All,

First off, this is my first 4runner and I'm not familiar with the engine so ... be gentle.

My roomate picked up a beater 89 [but second generation, 90+ body style] with a rotten body and 390K on the clock. He drove it for a couple of months before it started overheating and "puking coolant". He started to dismantle it with visions of taking off the head, but .. limited mechanical capability. He got tired of it / gave up and it has sat in the garage for the past couple of months. He was gonna s**** it, but I simply cant sit around and watch good trucks die, so I bought it off him for a case of beer.

So, poked around and determined the leaks were block heater and water pump. Fixed both, changed hoses, thermostat, all the good stuff. Roomate had partially dismantled a bunch of things - I really have no idea what all was touched, but exhaust manifold was sorta-kinda off, air cleaner was removed, belts and pulleys were off. He says vacuum hoses were untouched. The truck had an intermittent surging idle prior to the surgery.

So, buttoned it all up, hooked up everything I could see, charged the battery - holds fluid, cranks, catches, runs beautifully at about 1000 rpm.

then it dies.

about 2 seconds of run time and then she just dies. not a stall, just plain dies. and it doesn't matter what RPM its at, also dies if no gas is applied - sounds like some sort of engine shut-off. Does a 22RE have something like that? / any other ideas?

Sorry if this is a rookie question, I tried the search and was unproductive. Thanks in advance

Cheers,
Crash

make sure the the AFM is hooked up, if its left unhooked that is exactly what it does. Also try resetting the ECU and double check all the vaccum lines (especially the one that goes on top of the fuel pressure regulator)

Yeah, make sure the air flow meter is properly hooked up, it's the large thing that sits on top of the airbox right behind the driver's side headlight.

You can also try forcing the fuel pump to stay on and see if that cures it. Take a paperclip, bend it into a big U, and find the Diagnostic connector, it is attached to the fusebox behind the battery. Use the paperclip to jumper across the B+ and Fp pins in this connector, then see if it stays running. If so, and you're sure the AFM is properly connected, then there's something wrong with the fuel pump wiring.

Try this, report back.

bad pin in the MAF sensor. Cleaned it up, realigned it and she fired up and runs sweet.

Pics soon [no camera on hand]. Keep in mind its a Canadian 4Runner, so when I say rusty, I mean Re-define your definition of corrosion kind of rusty. You'll probably want to make sure small children, people prone to fainting, and anyone from California / arid states look away or leave the room.

Thanks again for all the help, I'll have pics up asap.

Sounds like how my 62 behaved after we forgot to reconnect the AFM after swamping the air intake and pulling the plugs to check for hydrolock. But you wouldn't know anything about that :p

yours would start, and run, but promptly refuse to continue to run once you tried to go anywhere. serves you right for trying to drown it / listening to ratpuke.
