Hey All,

Looking for a new vehicle for my wife. We're looking at the 2026 GX550, LC, and 4Runner. The GX is extremely far outside the price range of the other 2, so it will all come down to whether or not we want to spend that much money. So, here is where I could use some help.

The LC and T4R (with options) are only about $5k difference. I'm sure others who currently own the LC explored the T4R too and I was hoping you could share some reasons why you went with the LC. Any insights would be appreciated.

Thanks

JB

LC is all full time AWD. Rear locker standard on all trim.
4runner only in limited trim is full time.
4runner can come with beefier rear axles in some trims. Might not be an issue for your wife.
LC much better head room.
Interior are both cramped for the size.

If you don't need the 4L then Honda Passport are way better daily driver. Or maybe the new Outback.

Thanks for the reply. We live in the desert, so full time AWD not a huge impact. She's definitely not getting an Outback. LOL

I definitely noticed the headroom in the LC. I think the Cruiser feels much more refined and comfortable across the board, but she likes the "sporty" feel of the 4Runner.

We have been looking at the TRD Off Road Premium 4Runner which has a massive infotainment screen. For some reason, the Cruiser has the smallest infotainment screen and unless I'm messing something up, it doesn't appear there's a larger screen option.

1958 trim have small head unit.
People been swapping aliexprress unit with pretty good results. Something like this.

If she likes sportier feel, the passport are way sportier on road. Not to mention the cabin that are way more liveable for daily driving.

AWD is a pretty big benefit in gravel/sand too. The Toyota AWD/4WD system is honestly quite fun for blasting down gravel roads (and I had Subarus before getting a Toyota). And, if you are doing something like pulling up a steep gravel incline to turn on a highway, you won't have wheelslip and VSC/TRAC engagement with the AWD like you would with a part-time system.

LC250:

Best aesthetics (#1 reason)

Best headroom and seating position (#2 reason)

Looks like it was designed for adults (# 3 reason)

No interior storage (just throw all your crap away)

Interior sound proofing is nonexistent (easy fix add sound deadening)

4runner:

Horrid headroom

Exterior is fugly,

interior is overly tactical

Get the Limited, it has the same full time (AWD) system as the LC250

I force max, built in alternator/starter, if the Hybrid system goes down the engine can still run independently gas

FUGLY AF, makes Corky Thatcher look like Brad Pit

GX550:

Not as good looking as the LC250

Has that potential Toyota v6 thing going on (possibly)

Better soundproofing

Frat girl/trophy wife vibes

Available units on the lot

The thing that turned me off about the LC and 4Runner back-to-back was the visibility out the rear 3/4 is kinda horrific on the 4Runner because of what amount to styling decisions on the chunky C and D pillar. But roll-down back windows are awesome, so I think there's a lot of trade-offs to consider between the two. I still haven't tried a 1958 yet to see if I like that upholstery, if that stuff is nice that might be the sweetest sweet spot.

yes the roll up window i do covet that. great option for big dogs as well as airflow

LC vs 4Runner. The thing for me is, Toyota doesn't seem to have any interest in offering some option packages for the Cruiser like they do the 4Runner. That is a negative in my opinion. I had hoped when the Land Cruiser came out, at some point, Toyota would offer the Trail Hunter option or Trail Teams like they did with the FJ Cruiser. I guess what I am saying, there seems to be more options when it comes to buying a 4Runner as opposed to the Land Cruiser.

Global platform. Few mods and you have a “TRD pro” with non cheesy upgrades
But technically there is a TrailHunter/TRD pro already, it’s called the GX550 overtrail
Toyota skimped out on a few LC mods to upsale the consumer into the GX550
I personally want the swaybar disconnect with a suspension lift of my choose over the KDSS (or whatever they are calling it these days)

I went to buy a 4R because of price but when I priced one that would be comparable to the LCLC, it was just a few thousand more and on looks alone the LC won out. When we sat in both, my wife was totally sold on the LC. The 4R felt totally cramped to us even though basically the same size vehicles. The only two things I would rather have that the 4R has is the back window and possibly non-hybrid option. I haven’t had any hybrid problems, so has not been a real issue.

I wouldn’t have a GX if someone gave it to me. Would go trade for LC. I hate the front end on it, and I don’t want everything to be touch screen on inside. I really like having some actual switches. I also like the 12” screen better than the 14” which seems too tall to me. I would like to have that 6cyl twin turbo, but right now I would be terrified with all the problems that engine has had. I do like the earth and Nori green color choices.

I think the LCLC is the sweet spot. The premium would be my choice if you can get without the 20” wheels- which you cannot in the eastern half of the US as far as I understand.

That all being said- I think you have to drive them all and make the decision on what you and your wife like the best and go with that.

SO ... I had the wife drive both back to back today. She preferred the LC over the 4Runner. She felt like the 4Runner just felt small inside. She also noticed the power difference. Yes, I know they are the same platform, but they don't act the same. The LC was much more enjoyable to drive and had much better "road manners".

What is the intended use of the vehicle? That should dictate what you get.
That doesn't dictate anything in my family. My DD is a 2021 Porsche 911. LOL

That being said, it will mostly be DD and family vehicle for road trips. She's going to look at one that just came in. At the end of the day, momma gets what momma wants. LOL

The intended use is the same for both vehicles
It will come down to headroom and refined interior VRs over tactile dude interior lol

A better fit for that use case would be a Highlander of Grand Highlander Hybrid. We have the Highlander Hybrid version, which is my wife's daily. It's an amazing family road trip vehicle, can get nearly 40 mpg under the right conditions, 400-500 miles of range, very quiet inside, good 2nd and 3rd row legroom, and handles/stops better than a BOF SUV ever could.

Although at the time we bought the Highlander I was begging my wife to get a Nori green 2023 GX460 which was only nominally more expensive than the Highlander was. But, momma ended up getting what she wanted :). It's been a great vehicle though.

Welp. Here's where we ended up.

I see more LC250's available on the lot than GX550's here in Houston, not even close. Looks are subjective. I personally think the GX550 Overtrail is much better looking than the LC250 (which I also like), but we can both agree that the 6th Gen 4Runner is awful. It's like the 4th Gen's offspring that hit every single branch on its fall from the ugly tree with a side of fetal alcohol syndrome.
