We have narrowed our search down to a few Red/Blue LCs to replace our totaled one.

This one is a TX LC, 2016 CPO w/ 46K miles, 3 owner, clean carfax. Listed at $58,867.

  • VIN: JTMCY7AJ1G4041939

Anyone have thoughts on the 3 owner piece, should that bother me? Should the CPO provide peace of mind? I'm going to work the price but curious what others think I should pay for this out the door.

Salesman already sent me pictures of the undercarriage.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

That is a lot of owners. Definitely i would skip as who know why. As well it will hurt resale value in case you want to sell it one day

Could another way to look at this be that I can talk them down on price? We don't plan on selling it anytime soon.

Definitely an opportunity to get them down on price. Definitely the price is not the best with current millage. Still would be worried why a new owner each year on avg. Maybe a lemon with issues and everyone is dumping it. You are making a big investment and a piece of mind is important.

Further review of service history from toyotaowners.com shows some weird stuff. Complaints of rattles, something that appears to be a windshield replacement to remedy it....hmmmmm.

Chris

The CPO part is comforting in terms of repair costs, but the service records perhaps show a reason for 3 owners. How about the blue one at the same dealer?

The other one is black I believe, which is at the bottom of the list. The service history had like 4 reports of rattles/noises before being sold. Looks like the windshield was also replaced which I thought was weird.

The drivability complaints on carfax could be the known programming issues with the early 8spd software.. can often be fixed with the most current version but it seems dealers won’t do it without specifically asking for it.

But these aren’t known for rattles.. that does seem odd. Plus the windshield.

With the KO2s and being in Brownsville it may have spent time on a ranch or significant gravel too. Though that is speculation.

I gather you are in a crunch for time with your other rig being wrecked, but I’d guess there are more solid bets out there.

We are in a minor time crunch, and there are a few other options so we aren't SOL. There's a blue one in Rhode Island but they have yet to send me undercarriage pics/videos

My windshield was replaced by the dealer at 10k because a rock hit it. It happens all the time. A non issue if done by the dealer using factory parts. I have no rattles or leaks and there is no way you could tell by looking at it.

I just found it weird it wasn’t mentioned if it was damaged, just that it was replaced after the second or third visit for squeaks and rattles near the dash.

Look at some LX’s?
I am though my wife and I don’t love the 2016 LX interface/mouse pad system. I know that seems fickle but my wife also said she really just wants her land cruiser back. She likes the no flash/unassuming look of the 200 series

You might want to check out low mile 2013 to 2015 LXs, they have much of the same style as the Land Cruiser 200, easy touchscreen interface, and at a lower price. Aside from the suspension, headlights/taillights, and plastic bumper covers/front fenders, they're very similar, even have near identical side and rear profiles to the 2019 LC. Just another option as they are more widely available on the secondhand market.

Premium gas extra cost and a hope the adjustable suspension never needs repairs. Two reasons I went LC.

Only paid for premium for the first month, after that, 87 only.

The suspension is a higher cost item to replace but it does have some nice benefits.

I'd.... PASS ON THIS ONE...

Three (3) individual owners can't hate the "Toyota Land Cruiser" that much, they knew what they were buying, most leases are 2-3 years on these cars and purchase owner's are going to hang on to them a long, long time... (something doesn't feel right.)

A little side note on CARFAX... This is as of 8/2019.

A friend of mine has a 2016 GMC Yukon Denali XL over $80,000 out the door... needs the big rig because of kids and dogs... He can afford anything he wants to drive...

The GMC has 62,500+ miles approximately and the engine tanks... turns out a roller tappet bearing in one of the cams melted/fused/failed...

GMC has a 60,000 mile warranty power train warranty... they refused him any help or goodwill help with the repair...

Luckily his wife bought a dealership total extended warranty covers everything under the hood down to the leather seats...

The dealer and GMC even tried to pass the buck to each other on who was going to take care of the $80k POS...

Bottom line ( finally )…

The $6,000 to $8,000 engine repair will NOT show up on CARFAX!!!

My friend needed an oil & filter change... The dealer charged him for that and that is what CARFAX will indicate...

According to the dealer if someone with access to GMC's database finds it, my friend would have to sign some sort of customer privacy waiver for anyone to access the records of the extended warranty claim...

CARFAX is a good / helpful tool, but clearly can be usurped...

PS - My friend is so frustrated with this deal... They had a 2019 Ford Expedition XL out in Montana about 3 weeks ago with a turbo V-6 that would fizz out when you floored it to pass traffic (deadly slow), Mercedes GLS, Sequoia are still to small with kiddy seats dogs and gear... He was going to just buy a new Denali and trade the repaired one in straight from the service desk (not even pick up the keys to the POS, but he did bring it home about two days ago) so this is still a work in progress.

LOL... his loaner car was a 4 door base Canyon pickup that you could NOT tow with or put anything in the bed...

When I was looking for our next suv a few months ago we toyed around with the idea of a cpo g wagon. I saw several that had an essentially clean carfax that were then bought back as lemons. About five years ago I had an f250 that went to the shop six times in nine months. Ford wouldn’t take it back as a lemon so I traded it. Not a single visit to the dealer from those nine months showed up when I swapped it out for a Sequoia. Carfax is helpful only if it shows regular maintenance visits or has bad information (like three owners in three years). A “clean carfax” means relatively little to me.
