200 Series owners,

There is a TSB on this issue FYI. TSB 0003-09 "Intermittent no crank/no start...smart key system" and applies to 2008-2015 200 series (among many other models with this exact issue).

I can get my folk's truck (2008 200) to start with the remote start option but the push button is where the truck is hit and miss, mostly miss. The truck starts every time with the remote start so my guess is that the button needs replaced and Toyota has a documented campaign for this issue. I find it frustrating that Toyota doesn't seem willing to cover this unless is within the 3 year/36K warranty. I have contacted my local dealership and am awaiting their response. I hope they cover it. I will keep you posted if you would like me to.

Do you have a link to that TSB? Or a more complete TSB number? I am not able to find it.

TIA

Sorry, I forgot the extra 0. The Toyota T-SB 0003-09 will yield you results but nothing LC specific, more applicable model years and models.

This is from another forum (Toyota Nation):

T-SB-0003-09 (Smart Key Intermittent No Crank / No Start)

Quote:
Some customers may experience a “no crank” condition or a start and immediate engine stop condition when starting the engine using the “Push Start” switch. A new “Push Start” switch is now available to address this condition.

There are more than 4 models that this applies to, Highlander, Camry, Avalon, Land Cruiser and a few more IIRC.

Here is the Land Cruiser specific part number that replaces the original switch:

Original part number: 89611-52011
Replacement part number: 89611-07014

Dealership quoted me today $298 for the part and 1 hour labor to install @ $125/hour, about $425 total. I'm pretty sure that I can buy the part and install it myself for way less than half of the cost estimate. Anyone installed one? Pretty straight forward I imagine.
Hope this information helps a few of us who are beyond pissed/frustrated/who have been stranded or have pumped thousands into their trucks replacing starters and who knows what instead of this switch.

My 2011 just did the "start and immediate shut down" today, again. I don't remember how long it has been since it did it last but it has always started and the second try. (62k miles) I just thought I didn't push the start button properly.

Thank you for sharing your trouble shooting info with the group.

Do you happen to have the Slee primary battery tray kit?

No, I do not. Electrical sys is still stock except a new batt a few years ago.

Does this make a difference with the no start/no crank intermittent issue? If so, why and how?

@4gotalot @kah1593

UPDATE 7/9/2019: I REPLACED THE STARTER BUTTON WITH THE UPDATED PART (89611-07014 ) AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP. I HAVE CONTINUED TO START AND STOP, START AND STOP FOR ABOUT AN HOUR HOPING I CAN VERIFY IT WON'T LEAVE ME STRANDED AS IT HAS DONE PREVIOUS TO NOW.
PART COST WAS LESS THAN $200 SHIPPED AND IT TOOK ABOUT 12 MINUTES TO SWAP OUT THE OLD ONE AND REPLACE IT WITH THE NEW ONE. TOYOTA WOULD NOT HONOR THE TSB LISTED ABOVE WHICH IS ANOTHER STORY ALTOGETHER. I WILL KEEP YOU POSTED ON WHETHER IT WORKS FOR A DAY OR SEEMS TO WORK ONGOING.

I understand the reason for the big font. Thank you.

I also did not have to put my glasses on to read it.

@gaijin I appreciate your help. I initially made the font larger so it was highlighted in the post and thread. I updated the post with smaller font and can go back and take the caps out if necessary. Thank you for reminding me of my unintended lack of manners and etiquette. I'm do apologize for the misunderstanding.

Back to the topic at hand...

UPDATE: the new starter switch doesn't appear to have fixed the issue like I had hoped and as it first appeared to. It started consistently about a dozen plus times throughout the past couple hours. I tried it again after supper and nothing. Now I am open to other ideas if anyone has them. By the way, the remote start option works every. single. time. Think we can rule out the starter being in need of replacement? It seems like an electrical issue within the starting/security circuitry to me but don't seem to know where to next look. I was hoping that you 200 gurus might be able to help us out with this one. Any ideas?

The truck does have an IBS dual battery system, is there any chance that this could be a part of or the problem itself? Any known issues with these systems? Any ideas or troubleshooting tips? Is there a way to "unplug" it or bypass it to verify the IBS system is or is not part of the issue? Batteries are both brand new at full charge.

Thank you all in advance for your valuable input, I appreciate it very much.

Ever get a resolution?

away on business and wife texted saying it started and then abruptly stopped twice in a row. Eventually started later that day.

had happened to me about a month ago, but I figured I didn’t have my brake on or shifted out of park too quickly. 2015 with less than70k miles.

Using a hybrid agm battery and wired in a air compressor pump switch, butdoubt either of those are the cause. I do have the slew main battery tray as mentioned above, but no idea how that would impact the situation.

It ended up being a grounding issue which @Markuson pointed out in this or another similar "200 no start issue" thread. I don't recall if it was battery connection(s) or exact locations but a Toyota tech checked the system for voltage drains/leaks/issues, found it, fixed it and it hasn't happened since to my knowledge. My folks sold it shortly afterward and the new owner has been issue free since.

Try testing the system to see if/where possible there are grounding issues or possibilities of said. Mark was right on the money, thank you Mark!

I hope this helps.

Will do. Makes me think my auxiliary line I ran to the back to power the fridge may have something to do with it. Will check the grounding on my fuse panel I put back there. Thanks!

I've been hunting this ghost too on my 2017. Did any of you experience your rear tail lights randomly flashing after locking vehicle? I've noticed a few times after locking vehicle if I walk close to it a few minutes later the rear brake lights will flash and then the next morning the vehicle won't start. I've replaced battery (Toyota TruStart) and fob battery but have not gone down the other paths (starter replacement, start button, shift to neutral...). In my case when I get a no crank the dash lights flicker along with a rapid clicking noise. Usually if I wait a few seconds then press start a second time and hold it'll eventually crank after about 3-5 seconds. Yesterday that wasn't the case as I had to jump. This issue is so intermittent that trying to reproduce is impossible. I've been suspicious of dashcam as it activates with motion but it's supposed to shut off if battery voltage drops. Maybe the brake light flicker coincides with the dashcam activating on motion. Also suspicious of a brake controller that shows an error message and needs to be replaced but then I would expect this issue to happen more frequently and predictably rather than every few months. It's just one of those reliability issues which is exactly why I purchased an LC for the lack thereof.
