I have an opportunity to purchase a 08 LC with only 73K miles on it One owner, that used to haul friends and family around. I can get for 28K which is 18k over what was planning to spend but not locked into that price point. I am also looking at a GX470 for around 10-11K to be used as a over lander with my two sons. But this may be too good to pass up. Of course my 16 yr son wants the GX because it looks better. I have line on a 09 GX470 with 126K on it that I can get for 12,750. I know this is a 200 forum but having a hard time justifying the extra 16K. I will be getting out of a 2017 F-150 that I love but it's not a 4x4 and can't do much with it other than haul stuff.

$18k out of budget is a lot. Get The GX and enjoy. The 200 series is a marvelous beast, but no way I'd stretch myself almost $20k or go into debt to get one.

Thanks for the input, it's not a stretch per se, it just changes the way I approach my DD. The LC would be my DD until paid off in about 10-12 months. That what I had on my 2017 F-150 and planned on paying it off in 10-12 mo.

I agree I think the GX is a better buy here. Just hate to see a low-mile LC pass. I am going to buy a DD, something economical like a Civic or Corrolla. MY son will start driving soon and he is not taking the GX OR LC.

We have a 2008 cruiser and 2007 GX470. The GX drives smoother and better for around town since smaller plus I think interior is nicer. GX tows good with air suspension. We use the 2008 for family trips. I daily a 1999 cruiser since easier to drive than and has more character than the 2008. I ended up buying the 2008 last year over a 2018 F150 FX4 5.0. The GX is my wife's car. I would say if you plan to keep forever get the 2008 200 since GX's are a dime a dozen plus would be the one I would choose if within budget. Both should be low maintenance especially if the GX had the big 90k service. We spent $4k on the GX in the last year for 90k service, water pump at same time, shocks, new tires and repair center diff leak. The shocks on GX are expensive if you get the electronic ones but you can use 4runner shocks instead and also replace suspension with coils. For the savings over the 2008 200 you could build that GX up real nice. You won't lose much money on either if you decide to sell in a few years.

18k over budget is not a good choice. Since you budget for a GX470, go for GX470. There is no need to stretch your budget more than 150%. Once you can up your budget down the road, it's not too late to look into LC again.

Both GX and LC is a good choice.

Thanks, that was my thought process as well, I could put more into the GX and build it up.
My budget is not firm, it's just what I put it at to keep cost under control. I would keep the LC for a long time. We want to move back to CO from TX, not a fan of TX, not enough public land.

If you end up with the GX, joined the Facebook GXOR group. Lots of GX modification to inspire your build.

The GX would be better on a lot of those CO trails since it is much narrower than the LC and seems to have better angles. Does the 2009 GX have a rear camera? When I took the 2008 to Ouray last year the back up camera helped a lot on some switch backs that I had to make a 3 point turn since people parked on the switch back. If you don't buy the 2008 I am sure there are a lot of people on this message board that would be happy to buy it.

we bought our 08 two years ago with similar miles for quite a bit more than that. There were literally none on the market, ever. Has every option and was cared for. We may have overpaid but it is such a great rig. 28 K is an amazing price for that. I'd go for the LC all day.

All sound advice but an 08 with 73K that would be hard to pass up. It will certainly sell in a hurry it fits in the budget range of what a lot of guys on this forum that are looking to transition into their first 200. Being a low mileage one its a no brainer most would jump at that opportunity.

As mentioned, I paid quite a bit more than that for an 08 with 69k miles on it in late 2017. Having never driven a GX I can't comment on it over a 200. I do know that I probably wouldn't sell mine for that right now.

18k over budget and you had to come to a forum for advice?????

It's not very often you get a chance to purchase a used car that you know the history of, especially for a great price which is what you'd be getting the 200 series for. We currently have 2 100's, a 200, and recently owned a 2007 GX. The GX is an incredible vehicle, and there are several things I like better about it than our 200, but I would personally never choose a GX over a 200. Of course, it depends on your specific needs. We love the extra space and power the 200 has. Plus, the 200 will hold it's value very well over time.

Confused by your budget. It's $18k over your budget, but you plan to pay it off completely in 10 months? So is your budget an arbitrary number in your head or a legitimate financial constraint? If it's the latter, there is no question here - don't do it. If it's just some arbitrary made up number in your head and won't cause you any financial strain, the 200 is hands down the better option. We've had so many threads about what truck is better than another, so this doesn't need to turn into another one. But the long story short is that's a hell of a deal on a 200, and you're unlikely to find a better deal if that one checks out. I'd either pull the trigger or post up the details here so one of the many people here looking for one can pull the trigger and get into a low mile truck.

It's not a real budget, it is a cap I set myself at so I wouldn't go buy a brand new LC or 460. This one fell in my lap, I'm in position to take advantage so I might. This will not be my DD. Just a over lander for my sons and I

Thanks, it is an arbitrary number. Will not affect financially in anyway. It started out as a hobby for my sons and I and this fell in my lap so....go big or go home comes to mind. I told my 16 yo that he might bring his kids home in it, hopefully 10 years from now! I agree, on the 200 being too good to be true. The current owner is waiting for his Merc to be delivered to the dealer, he will trade it in and I have already cut a deal with them to purchase once they get it.

Your first post mentions that this is a 100 forum... Doh!

But anyway... My 2008 now has about 122k on it, and I still turn and glance back at it in the parking lot. Wife calls it my girlfriend... :hillbilly: As years roll on, I only like it more...and believe it or not...even 11.5 years old, I still get asked if it’s some NEW model LC after I wash it. People can’t believe it’s age...which is amazing considering how much it gets wheeled and wheeled HARD.

Just yesterday after hitting the car wash and the Costco next door...still found myself compelled to snap a photo. :) A little bit o psychosis perhaps...haha, I know...but here is my 2008 yesterday...which will hit 12 years since manufacture in November:

You won’t regret it...
-Even on my limited budget,..I know I don’t.
