TL;DR
2006 LC with ~280k miles. Seeing intermittent lean/misfire codes that cleared themselves, front suspension/brake clicking, possible CV noise with grease present, and debating reboot vs replace. Also looking for suspension recommendations for constant 450-500+ lb load (minimal lift, longevity-focused). Lastly, need confirmation on correct OEM key fob part number. Open to San Antonio shop recommendations.
Howdy LC Lovers,
I am posting because I am in need of some guidance. I am getting some conflicting info from places that have seen my LC for maintenance, and I know what codes I am seeing and what sounds I am hearing. All that being said, I would love to get some opinions from the group of brains here.
I got the LC at ~204k miles and now have just about 280k on it. I have had a number of things done to the vehicle, with some of the history below:
- Recent Codes that have since resolved – P0420 Code error on 2006 LC with lots of recent maintenance
- Suspension Questions – Suspension Replacement Recommendations / Questions - 2006 LC
- 2006 Land Cruiser P0330 - Knock Sensor Drama at the Dealer
Codes
Confirmed codes (BlueDriver 1/7/2026):
- P0174
- P0420
Pending codes (BlueDriver 1/6/2026):
- P0300, P0302, P0304, P0147, P0308, P0301, P0171
Both sets of codes cleared themselves within ~50–100 miles and have not resurfaced. No current CEL.
Questions:
- Should I be concerned about anything here, or does this point to something transient (bad gas, etc.)?
- Should I replace the spark plugs as preventative maintenance? I’ve read many posts here that recommend replacing only at ~120k or when they actually go bad. Based on no change in fuel economy, I don’t strongly suspect plugs, but wanted opinions.
Front-End / Suspension Noises
I’m hearing clicking and clacking when going over bumps fairly often. I am assuming this may be due to tired shocks that have lost most or all of their fluid. I can see what looks to be fluid evidence on the passenger side shocks both front and rear
I also hear clicking when applying the brakes from the front. Universal Toyota did the front brakes. When I press the brake pedal, I hear a clicking sound. When I got under the vehicle and manually manipulated the brake components and pins, I could see where the click is coming from. There is a small amount of play in some parts.
Is this normal after a brake job, or a sign something wasn’t installed quite right?
Wheel Bearings. Some shops have said one needs to be replaced. Toyota Dealership (don't trust them much) said neither needed to be replaced. Unsure as to what should be done here. Should the bearings be replaced, or just replaced. Could this be some ofmy noise?
Suspension upgrade considerations:
- The LC probably carries at least 500+ lbs all the time. ARB Front Bumper, Sleeping Platform, storage boxes/gear
- With roof boxes and a rear hitch cargo carrier loaded for cross-country or ski trips, it’s closer to 700–750+ lbs.
- My goal is longevity, good ride quality, and a minimal lift (~1–1.5 inches).
- Is it possible to keep the lift at a minimum to extend CV axle life with these kits?
I’m not sure if OEM Tokico still makes sense at this point.
Currently considering:
- Dobinsons Base Kit 1.5"
- Dobinsons IMS 1.5"
- Open to OME and Ironman and others.
- For Ironman would the Ironman 4x4 Foam Cell Pro Suspension Lift Kit be a good option? It looks like its a higher lift at 2"
- Should I consider replacing control arms, ball joints, other parts with the suspension?
Very open to other options that maintain ride quality and durability. I do not know tons about lifts or suspensions, but am learning.
CV Axles
When turning left or right, I sometimes hear a screeching noise. Not sure if this is suspension-related or CV-related.
Multiple shops have mentioned the CV boots are throwing grease. When I look under the vehicle, I see road grime/grease buildup between the inner and outer boots on both sides. The boots themselves do not look torn or obviously damaged, and both sides look very similar. I can go back under the vehicle again to look or post pictures.
I drove the vehicle in tight circles at full lock and just off full lock, left and right, forward and reverse, on a slight incline and decline, while applying some brake and some throttle. I occasionally noticed squeaking or chirping, but not consistently tied to wheel rotation. I didn’t hear consistent clinking, though maybe randomly once or twice. In enclosed areas or next to walls, the screeching sound is more noticeable when turning.
At this mileage, does it make sense to replace inner and outer boots, or is it time to plan on new CV axles?
Replacement Key Fob
For a 2006 Toyota Land Cruiser:
One OEM key fob part number is 89070-60750, often associated with FCC ID HYQ12BBT. Another common part number is 89070-60B60 / 89070-60B61, often associated with FCC ID HYQ1512V.
The Toyota dealership took my VIN and recommended 89070-60B61, but when I opened my existing key fob it clearly shows FCC ID: HYQ12BBT.
I found these posts helpful:
I also found this on eBay:
OEM 2003-2009 TOYOTA FJ CRUISER 3 BUTTON HEAD KEY LESS ENTRY FCC ID:HYQ12BBT | eBay - https://www.ebay.com/itm/295142392638
…but I’ve seen several members recommend avoiding the eBay route.
Based on this, would 89070-60750 be the correct OEM solution?

(If this should be its own thread, I’m happy to split it out.)
San Antonio Shop Recommendations
I am located in San Antonio, TX. I’ve had work done at:
- Alamo Auto Doctors
- Universal Toyota
- Brake Check
- Discount Tire
Most recently, I’ve been looking at:
- BringYourOwnParts.com (North San Antonio)
- Premier1 Auto Care (John)
If anyone has recommendations for a solid shop that isn’t crazy expensive, I’d really appreciate it.
