2005 LC - Aux. Fuel Tank Options?

Correct because for some reason or another, Toyota moved the charcoal canister on '03+ US market 100's. Not sure which other markets but for sure not the Middle East nor Oceania.

Got it... so it's just an issue on 03+ models then?

Yes. '98-'02 not an issue. The OEM ~13 gallon aux tank fits in the space above the spare. Or if you relocate the spare from underneath you can fit up to about a 25-gallon, as I did with my custom tank, in the same location pretty much protected by the frame rails. If you are willing to drop below the frame rails with the tank you can go even larger.

Small shift in topic...I had a LRA 24 gal aux tank installed where the spare was about 1.5 years ago on my 2000 100 series MAF part # LR24100RAX (i think same as Hoser). Happy except for an incredibly annoying thunk, and pop sound that intermittedly comes from the aux tank. It happens under two conditions. 1) When I release pressure from the cap, or when the weather is warm and the tank expands and contracts. 2) when I flex the suspension on uneven ground or over a large curb or speed bump. I wonder if it because i usually leave the tank empty and it is just expanding or am I alone in my complaints. Anyone have the same problems? any solutions such as more bracing?

My sender is under the red cap on top of the tank... but I do not know where it is located on the Long Ranger tank.

Hoser, where did you source that tank, also do you have pictures showing how sits under the rear......i.e. clearance

I got mine from Man A Fre. Part # LR24100RAX. I think it is identical to hoser's Also see post # 25 on this thread about my installation. Clearance is not an issue. It sits below the fram rails by 2 inches closest to the rear diff, and angles up and out of site. You can not even see it from the side or rear unless you bend down and look up.

Thanks for the info

On another note, does anyone know if something like this exists for the 100?
MAF FJ80 / LX 450 Long Range Replacement Tank

No, I don't experience that. My guess it is likely one of the larger top/bottom panels on the tank. The bottom could be braced with reinforcement plate.... or you can try reducing the noise by throwing on some of that stick-on sound deadening material (as seen on stainless steel sinks).

Glad to hear you have not heard those loud expansion noises/thunks. I may try to remove and re-install to see if it is binding up in anyway, and also look to more bracing across the bottom large panel. I had it installed so there is no way for me to know. Do you know if it had any internal bracing? Thanks again.

DesertRun,

I have experienced that noise in a different aux tank in an 80 Series. When it is hot out and it has a lot of vapor it will make the tank flex a little bit and will make that noise. Maybe you need a better venting system.

I have a different issue, same tank as hoser in a 1999 100 Series. When its hot out or at altitude AND off-road my charcoal canister can't keep up to a point that gas will spill out when I open the gas cap.

I am sorry for the thread hijack (I think):D

I've not had gas purge at the cap although I think Rohitash's did on the Coyote Flats trip last summer. But I do have significantly more pressure build up which is to be expected I guess since I doubled the amount of vapor the charcoal canister has to process. I wonder if there's a venting difference between our set-ups that might explain this issue?

Probably time, as a cheap prudent measure, to replace the charcoal in the canister.

Thanks for the replies about pressure build up. I have racked my brain over this one. It may be time for a new thread titled "Aux Tank Pressure Build Up". In any case In two years I have not had any gas purging when I remove the cap, but my tank makes expansion noise all the time. Even sitting in the garage not driven for days. It has to be pressure from vapor. I know the cap is important in keeping the right pressure in the tank. In fact I have heard people complain of warning lights or codes with bad caps although I have never had it happen. I will change the cap to see if the pressure release is somehow failing to regulate it correctly. One other note, I keep the aux tank empty most of the time, since I do not worry about condensation and the truck is garaged in southern ca where the temp is mild, but that may be an issue also.
Two questions though.
1) How does the charcoal filter work to regulate vapor pressure?
2) Any idea of cost or complexity in changing it out, and is this something people have had issues with?

Thanks for your help, this is driving me and my passengers crazy at times.

Here's some good info on the subject of charcoal canisters started by FirstToy.

https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/239299-charcoal-canister-modification-need-help.html

My understanding of what the charcoal canister does: Back in the 'olden days' fuel tank fumes were vented directly to the atmosphere. But due to smog and/o pollution potential sometime, don't know the date, conditioning these fumes became mandatory. The fumes vent through the charcoal filtering the fumes. I can't tell you how effective this process is. IOW does it render the fumes 100% or more realistically something less than 100% noxious?

The charcoal, just like a water filter of the same material, eventually gets logged with whatever its filtering.

Others on the 80 forum have mentioned having fuel or strange fumes coming from the engine bay. Changing out the charcoal canister eliminated their problem. I can tell you on fairly warm or hot days after some serious climbing, on or off-road, I do get a strange (as in: Not direct fuel, tranny fluid, brake fluid, motor oil, etc. type odors) odor coming out of the engine bay. I have attributed this to a worn out and overloaded (much more pronounced since the aux tank was installed) charcoal.

I haven't researched if the non-USA model LCs that came with dual fuel tanks have a different, i.e. larger or redundant, charcoal canister? Or is this just a USA requirement?

Warren: Do you have a charcoal canister on your's?

So the charcoal project, albeit not a difficult project in the grand scheme of things, has been on my list for almost a year. I guess its time I move it up on the list

Well now you have me thinking that I may have that problem as well. Last August I headed up into the Sierras to nearly 10,000 feet from 1,000 ft in 90 minutes and I had the same issue. Strange gas smell coming from under the hood. In fact, I freaked out when I opened the hood. There was a little platic cap that was making a hissing noise. The smell was bad when I opened the windows. After a 2 hour hike the problem went away, and never happened again. Had to be the altutude change I thought. Sooooooo now what. I have two issues that could be related. I think I will change the cap for sure. Then I need to research the charcoal cannister some more to see if having 50 gallons of fuel is overwhelming the charcoal system. One other note, I am coming up to a SMOG test in 2 months so this could be fun. I was already worried about the filler tube not having a restrictor flap in it, now I can add two more items to the list of items to worry about.

I think I will start another thread on this issue. You should see it shortly, and thanks in advance for your help.
