got my car back from the dealer after service and throttle body cleaning. a day or two later my wife told me that she felt a vibration/groaning when the car is in drive and the foot on the brake. it goes away when you release the brake and start to drive. the car rides fine but when you stop, it happens again. took it back to the lexus dealer and they told me i needed new motor and transmission mounts. they put them in ($500 plus) but the problem still exists. i left the car with them and the next day they called me stating that there was a technical service bulliten out dealing with this problem and the repair consisted of a lot more than just motor and transmission mounts. they told me that if my car was under warranty it would be covered, however, my service rep had spoken to the service manager and explained the situation to her. she told him that she would back him however he wanted to solve the issue. my service rep told me that since i had paid for the motor and transmission mounts that they were going to pick up the rest of the bill. he had mentioned before that it was three to four time what i had already paid. the parts should be in on monday and i hope it gets fixed. has anyone else had this problem? i've looked for the tsb but can't find anything dealing with this issue

Uh-oh for me...I might have this.

I was thinking motor mount or tranny mount and just hadn't done anything about it yet because it's not constant yet. Was going to wait until to do anything about it...holiday spending & all...

Funny- I was thinking about this an hour ago driving home.

Please post the outcome & what the dealer fixed/replaced...

It sounds like the TSB labelled as Exhaust Booming at Idle. It happens in D while stopped at an idle - goes away in P or once you start moving. Depending on the VIN there are a variety of fixes, including motor mounts. It sounds like they are following the diagnostics in the TSB. If you want a copy of it, you can download it from the toyota tech site - but have to pay a fee (e.g. $10/day). If you have a fast connection you could download all the TSBs, and the FSM also.

My 2000 LX makes a fairly loud humming noise when I'm stopped and in drive. I always thought it was the engine because the RPM stays so low, thats what Lexus said when asked about 2 years ago. Is this normal, or is it the above mentioned problem?

Those heat shields can make all kinds of noices... I cinched mine down with clamps as suggested by others and worked wonders. I wonder why some folks just get the never ending noise out of the front end of these trucks... my 2001 had the booming once in a while but turned out to be one of the tones of the heat shield vibrating.

they called me from the dealer today, the car is fixed. i will pick it up tomorrow and post on sunday.

1 year later, still droaning

well, after i went to the dealer to take care of this situation, they replaced both motor mounts and tranny mount. part #'s 12361-50121 and 12371-50081 for a total of $322.60 out of my pocket.

it was a little better for a week, then back to the same.

i took the car back with the same complaint and they replaced the following;

part # 17405-50040 pipe sub assembly
90177-A004 lock nut
17551-50090 muffler insulator
50259-60040 weight #4 cross
90626-61030 bolt with washer
51543-60020 bracket damper

they did not charge me for the parts or installation the second trip, but i still have the same problem

clamp down those heat shields... mine made all kinds of noises (most notably parked in Drive)... four straps and 15 bucks later and has been just fine for 2+ years now (2001 LX).

I sometimes get a buzzing sound when the engine is still cold and when at a stop. I traced it down to the plastic rear fender liners vibrating. We figured this out since one day, it was extremely windy when I went to the grocery store. My wife stayed in the car (engine off) and it made that same buzzing noise, from the left rear fender liner (thin plastic). I haven't bothered to stick anything to it to change the vibration frequency. No exhaust rust here in AZ.

We get something very similar to what's being described here. I haven't been able to figure it out yet, either. Just like yours, mine does it when sitting at a stop in drive; goes away when start to drive again.

To me, the sound is more of a deep hum, almost like you'd associate with a pump or compressor. I originally thought it was the a/c compressor, but not it. Definitely not a tinney sound that could be associated with heat shields.

I would have never thought to blame the engine/tranny mounts, but i guess it didn't work anyways. Sounds like something the stealer pulled out of their butt to get some labor hours on your rig. Did you get your old parts back for spares and to see that they actually replaced them?

I have the same problem on my 01 LX with 125k miles. I read in another thread a couple weeks ago that for some people it was the plastic engine cover, something like the bushings wear out or something. Havent tried it yet tho

Just had my factory exhaust replaced with OEM, but without the muffler damper. It's quite noticeable in the car (in D, vehicle stopped):

Ah, found it in another thread (along with the service bulletin, part of which is shown below).

Looks like I need the 39Hz damper.

To be clear, it's not a failure of any of the mounts or bushings, as every single one was just replaced.

Never realized they had different dampers for frequencies. Thanks for posting!
