2000MY HZJ76 smallest wheel size?

Should the 16" alloys stay - currently have all 5?

No idea if the tires are still good (K02s), but if not,. really leaning towards steel wheels with the silver caps.

I'm pretty old, so I go by what I was taught in the 80's - get the biggest, grippiest tire on the smallest wheel (gotta save weight somewhere).

Is the smallest wheel diameter 15" or can 14" be used?

Criteria is - able to full lock (no rubbing) and no use of spacers.

14" rims won't fit, and I doubt you'd be able to find any suitable tires for a 14" rim anyway. If you've got a full set of 16" wheels those are good, still quite a few decent options for tires. A lot of folks are moving to 17" wheels when running bigger tires since there are better options offered in that size.

How big are you planning to go? I've been quite happy with my modest 235/85/16 (31.7") tires on my 78 but wouldn't mind moving up to a set of 255/85/16's (33") at some point. Beyond that size you'd probably need a regear in either the diffs or transfer case.

You're right...no sense if I can't find any tires...

The 16" alloys are the ones that came stock with the HZJ76. Told it was the default for the ZX trim with a 5 SP manual. It's just they're so heavy.

As close to stock total circumference as possible.
No desire to regear or do math to figure out my actual speed...

Guess I'll peruse what I can find in between 31x10.5 15" and 33's.

If all else fails on getting steel wheels like the Toyota ones for the older LC's (with metal caps),

I'll be looking into aftermarket options for steel wheels (Dorman, etc). No idea where to start on pattern, width, etc...

I'd be surprised if aftermarket steelies are lighter than the factory alloys.

Also, I haven't tried on a 76, but not sure 15" rims will fit on the coil front end trucks due to brake clearance.

Not sure myself.
Just going off of experiences with previous vehicles when going from alloys to plain steel wheels.

Would rather have the Toyota Black wheels (steel?) with silver caps.
But if I have to go aftermarket, then I guess I have no choice...

Oh wow... thanks for mentioning about the limitations due to the coils and brakes size

...Thought I read in the past that base levels of 1999+MY HZJ76 (LX?) Auto trans, comes with 15"s.

Seems like staying around your current and possible upgrade size (255?) will be best...

Mine are the factory 16x6 ET0 alloy wheels. A 16x7 would work equally well with 235’s or 255’s.

Yeah, not looking for Moab clearance...my immediate vicinity (SE Wisconsin) will be more than fine with stock height and level with good tires.

As long as I'm able to deal with the excess snow/ice/slush and rain when the WX goes to poo...it'll be GTG.

I struggle to remember what I had for breakfast some days.
Sorry, I don’t remember the actual tire dimensions. I do recall one’s choices in off-road tires being limited with 15” rims. It’s hard to imagine that situation has gotten better over time.

That's what my thinking was concerning 14/15" wheels.
But your fellow BM's straightened me out by telling me that some of the main changes of the HZJ77 going to the 76 was 15" to 16" wheels with 5 lugs instead of the previous 6...

Luckily for me, you guys are really knowledgeable about the HZJ7* platform - now it's up to me to try and get up to speed.

You need 5 x 150 rims for any change. First generation 100 series don't fit solid axle front. I fitted 18" USA 2007+ rims with rear spacers and ALSO 5/16" front spacers but still had contact on the front on tight turns.

There are few option in the US. 14" or 15" are non existent. I would not use 18" USA rims as the backset if 7" and really poor for a solid axle truck.

42611-60D20 are steel 16 x 6" US delivered rims for around $110 each (discount dealers).
255/85 R16's are the go to. I have Falken At4's. Wait for a sale (Black Friday/Cyber Monday best)

I may be stating the obvious here: big, wide tires (wider than 265 mm or 10.5 in.) kill 70 Series Land Cruisers. They are too much for the 1HZ engine as well.

You may want to keep your 16 in. wheels. Put in some 235s/255s/265s and do not look back.

Think after all of the helpful input, I'll stay with 16s but have steelies. Haven't decided to sell the OEM alloys or keep for a 2nd set of mounted wheels/tires...

Not trying to make a expedition rig or rock crawler - I'm cheap. Frugal? No - just cheap.
In saying that, I'm a realist and understand good products and service costs money.

Just like to have something to take off road once in a while (fire trails?), but primary focus is being confident driving in SE Wisconsin WX when it gets bad - snow/slush/ice and lots of heavy rain.

31 x 10.5 AT is good enough for most applications without rub.

33s are available in 235mm or 9.25 in. They are a good choice; several 'Mud users have them on their trucks. Moreover, they look good on a 70 Series. Pizza cutters!

Spacers are not necessary for these tire sizes if you keep the stock wheels.

Anything wider than 10.5 in. or 265 mm will rub. It will wear out axle bearings and seals as well. Ask me how I know.
