Hello 200 folks,

I have wondered this for quite some time and maybe it has been covered somewhere previous to now. If it has been covered, I apologize for being duplicitous.

Why is it that it seems nearly every 200 owner out there almost immediately ditch their Factory wheels for some bling bling aftermarket ones? Are Factory wheels inferior for some reason? What gives? Why are the Factory wheels avoided like the plague and the aftermarket bling bling is so attractive?

Just asking. I happen to like the Factory wheels quite a bit and am wondering why so few do.

I think there are actually quite a few folks on here running stock wheels. But I think the main reason many switch is because stock offset is 60mm which can make tires seem rather recessed. Rock Warrior wheels are an extremely popular upgrade for good reason. They are 17” but still fit around the brakes of the 200 (most 17” wheels don’t fit), they are forged, and extremely strong for their weight...and give a slightly wider stance at 50mm offset.

Other popular 200 wheel optionally range anywhere from a significantly wider stance at 20mm to 35 or 40ish.

I run Rock Warriors (with .75” spacers now in order to more easily clear KDSS /sway bars running wider 35’s)...but there are a wide range of solutions depending on what you’re after.

If you are asking specifically about people putting 20” wheels on? They aren’t for me as they mean less rubber on the trails. I think the big rims are more about aesthetic preferences. I don’t personally prefer that look, but many others just like it even if not helpful off road. :)

Stock wheels do fine on the trails at 18”, but if you plan to wheel hard, you might want to avoid 20”+.

On the other hand...you can certainly wheel your butt off in 20” wheels and aggressive ATs. Some super active wheelers on here have 20’s, so to each their own. I just prefer airing down pretty low and prefer lots of rubber over lots of metal.

Do what makes you smile!
All good! :steer::steer::steer::steer:

For looks? Okay, but what about the changes in scrub radius and the subsequent effect on handling?

I like seeing less wheel and more tire. Love me my Rock Warriors!

I off road my LX hard. Bone stock on the stock 20” wheels. I run 18” tundra wheels in ththe winter with winter tires. I think you hear more about aftermarket wheels around here because people don’t really bring up stock set ups. That and the “mod” crowd feel the need to change things, many things.

I’m thinkin scrub radius is based on offset, width and overall (mounted tire) size. Not whether you run 20” wheels or other.

Handling... On the street? Ok. :)
I think other factors will have greater effect on street manners, but YMMV (like suspension, lift/no lift, tread design, pressures, etc).

No axe to grind. Just thinkin.

No axe to grind here either. My only point was to highlight that there are many, many considerations such as the scrub radius to consider when choosing wheels other than looks, both on- and off-road, such as wheel kickback when hitting a pothole or rock. The entire suspension geometry is a carefully thought-out compromise and changing just one parameter affects many others.

Did you read the rest of my post?

My looks comment referred ONLY to very large wheels like 20+”...because for an off-roader, there are no real benefits to taller wheels. Tires, yes. Wheels...not so much.

To the OP, having been on the boards for awhile, there's actually quite a number that do run stock wheels. At least half if not more. In terms wheel load rating and quality, one would be very hard pressed to find an aftermarket wheel of higher quality, if any exist at all.

Rock warriors are one of the very very few options in the aftermarket that meet these lofty OEM standards. But you would expect that coming from TRD, as Toyota's performance arm. They are unique and have a 50mm offset.

When I say stock wheels, I mean OEM, which also includes all the OEM variances you can get from the Tundra/Sequoia/LC/LX470/LX570/etc. It represents quite a large set of wheel styles. These are almost all universally 60mm offset. Part of the challenge when going to a bigger and potentially wider tire is that one needs to create clearance with added offset, via spacers. Optimal offset actually changes with overall tire diameter. For a 33", ~50mm. 34", ~42mm. 35", ~35mm.

So no bling needed off-road? :D

Man people can do whatever they want...bling included. :)

Just addressing the OPs query about the many reasons people often swap wheels...and how it’s also perfectly normal not to.

For what it’s worth...I’m contemplating adding something entirely useless—a couple of blacked out 5.7 badges. Mainly because I get a kick out of people trying to figure out what the heck I’m actually driving. They can’t see the “Land Cruiser” plate on the back... People’s guesses range from 4Runner...Highlander(!)...Sequoia...and Range Rover (ugh!). :hillbilly:

Those Oshkosh thangs are beast for sure...

Monster...

I’ve got two complete sets of 18” stock wheels. One set (currently installed) has standard highway tires. The other set has my off-road tires — K02s.

Just put on a "Range Rover G63 by BMW" badge and sticker. In Gold. :D

Heh... Ya, I be thought of such things, but more like Highlander badges or “Prius XXL” or something. :)
