Spent the long weekend up near Aspen for a music fest, and brought fishing, hiking, and biking gear. So much to do up in that area for outdoor activities. Found a neat dirt road from the canyon to the north, where you can drive up and over to Aspen mountain (formerly Ajax) and end up right downtown Aspen. Nothing better than parking your dirt-covered LX downtown Aspen surrounded by shiny Land Rovers and G-wagons!
Stopped in the Rolex dealer to try on a few fancy watches, but didn't buy anything. Then, back in the LX for a hike to 12,500' and some fishing!

I have a couple of Rolexs, one, my father's. Here's the thing: after my father died, I sent his Rolex that he acquired back in the 60's to the Rolex Service Center via the dealer at South Coast Plaza to have it serviced as I wanted to give it to my son. Rolex sent it back a week later stating that the parts are no longer made and they would not service it, but would be happy to sell me a new one... So now, I have a $10,000 paper weight. I took my 5512 Submariner off and put it in my safe. I now wear a Citizen / Garmin depending on the situation. I won't do business with a company that puts expiration dates on their products, especially when they are advertised to last for generations. Other watch companies will make parts they don't have in stock to keep their vintage watches going.
I did not make it on that road the last time I was in the Aspen area back in 2021. In fact, I don't think I have been on that road since 1991 or 2019. Been to Aspen so many times I don't remember. Got to get back.

It's a fun, easy drive that I don't think many people know about.
The rack is a 1Up. I bought it used. Solid as a rock!
If you're up for doing a little legwork...ask around your local, high-end, private watch-makers...definitely worth a second opinion if you can find a lifelong expert. It's a dying industry unfortunately, but you may be able to get lucky and find someone highly competent who can do what you need. Without a further explanation from Rolex on what needed replacement that was NLA, it's definitely worth doing a little more research on that outside what Rolex is telling you. Like cars, the dealer isn't always your best bet. Best of luck! I say this because that's an awesome family piece to pass down and would be very cool if you could get it up and running again. Is the location listen in your profile your primary residence? I'd be happy to ask around on who may be recommended in the area.
Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I do live in Lake Arrowhead and have been looking around at independent watch shops for a while and it seems as if most of them advertise "expert watch repair, buy / sell stuff and loan money". Not too confidence inspiring. There are a couple of shops down towards Yorba Linda that get mostly good reviews so I might check them out. Need to save my pennies now as I have dumped a fair amount of money into the LC and other cars recently. Thanks for the offer of help, appreciate that! It would be helpful to know if you come across something.
My brother hired a guy to refurbish his old grandfather clock. Paid a boatload for it. Also a dying industry, but damn if that didn't sound like the most satisfying career choice the world has to offer. I wonder if he needs an apprentice

It use to be so much smoother, but all those Jeep tours ruined it. Those tourists look miserable in the backs of those un air conditioned Jeeps.

We drove from Calgary, AB all the way to Vancouver, BC this summer (approx. 1,000 km one way) and we did not see a single Toyota Land Cruiser 100 or 200 series nor Lexus LX 470 or 570 while driving around metro Vancouver for almost a week. We just saw one LX 470 parked at a Tim Hortons in Maple Ridge, BC. I guess the price of premium gas made them disappear from the streets there
Make sure you check out Broken Arrow before you leave that area!! One of my favorite trails.
