The H4 is just a weaker version of L4 or I at least I think thats right

I don't think it's any weaker, just a higher ratio.

The button on the dash is not a "vacuum" button, it is also electric. There is a detection switch on the side of the t-case that overrides the dash button and forces the solenoids on the firewall to engage the front drive (via vacuum).

A detection switch that if defective or disconnected creates a situation where you can have two wheel low if desired - don't push the dash switch in and you have two low. My truck has a defective switch and on more than one occasion I've forgotten to push the dash switch after shifting to low range and have wondered why an obstacle was more difficult than I thought! Still, I like having the option.

SSSAAAWEEEET write-up.. been trying to poke around and figure out how this was done. Thanks! A definate FAQ item that needs to be added to the list - IMHO.

Ok, so other than the ability to chirp my 33's into second gear through the a440, what does 2 lo get me?

I know it is obviously a much lower gear ratio, but I'm not sure what you guys are using it for.

Overhanger so you just disconect the switch from the tcase and would that be the easiest way to get L2 on a fj62? Is there a speed limit(maximum speed) for L2? Is the transfer mechanisam right above the frame where theres a skid plate(in the middle of the car)?

line lock the front, scoot large ass of truck around things such as trees and rocks...I also use it on water crossing, because if the front driveshaft is spinning I think it might suck in more water than if it was not. Also it is nice when you have a front locker and you need to make a tight turn on the trail....

just wondering .. but I thought ( semi related ) when I go in my HDJ-80 in 4L I don't need to push the dash button ..

Keep in mind I have a part time t-case HF1A

I should quantify my statements by relating that my truck is an FJ62 with the A440F tranny.
What lowtideride said as for the reasons to have 2lo although having line lock ability isn't really necessary to enjoy the virtues of a brakelocked front axle so you can caterpiller your away around a rock or whatever. As the front discs can bind up the front axle and the F engine can overpower the rear drums pretty easily, steering by the front axle without a line lock is doable. Max speed in 2lo is determined much like it is in H2 - how high do you want to rev your engine although it is much easier to reach redline in low range. The torque convertor locks up in low range just like it does in high range.
I haven't had to disengage the switch to get to 2lo as my truck came with a defective switch to begin with. Try it and let us know if disconnecting the switch works, it's easy enough to get to.
Oh, another reason to have this ability is so you can embarass the crap out of yourself when you are in front of a crowd and forget to punch the dash switch to engage the front axle. I've only done that three or four times at the most inopportune times. Oh well, one of my mottos is "No fools, no fun!".

I do not recommend chiping the tires or trying to accerate fast while in 2lo. Caution should be taken because all the power is going to rear tires and I would think IMHO breakage will be more likely than in 4lo. Good uses are steep hills up or down, rocky sections on main trail, boat ramps, trafffic jams, crowded parking lots, and of course showing your friends how your cuiseer will climb parking dividers in 2 wheel drive.

I dont mean to hijack but.. Does anyone know what the switch looks like? I looked at the t-case but there are 2 or 3 wires coming out of it. Which do you think it is #1, 2, or 3 Im thinking the 3rd one because its closer to the front axle. Oh and thats mud not rust.
