2 belts for Alternator

Question: Does the 80 amp, external fan alternator run 2 belts of the same length or are they different?

i've searched this thread (https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/473165-alternator-belt-tensioner.html) and found the info that an FJ80 series alternator needs 2 belts...Is this correct?
I'm posting this for a friend with a 1991 FJ 80...i myself am an FJ60 owner so this 2 belt, alternator is new to me.

My friend is replacing it with the 80 amp, external fan alternator and not the internal 90 amp one. Only one belt was on the alternator we removed. Will it cause issues to only run one belt? Anyone have part numbers for the 2 belts from dealership?

Any and all extra info on this would be appreciated.

I have an FZJ80 and it does indeed run two belts. I ran a single belt for a year and had no issues. If you go to Toyota and get the belts it is a set and it cost around 40 bucks I think. Do your self a favor and go oem on the belts. On a side note I think there are two belts for redundancy but not 100% on that.

Are these belts the exact same or do they each run separate routes meaning they will have different lengths?

I need the belts today and the dealership doesn't have them in stock. I completely understand going OEM but it's not my rig and it needs to be done today.
 
Worldspan: contact American Toyota in New Mexico, ask for Onur or Dan in parts, they will probably have what you need in stock and they give Mudders a discount

Yes, thanks Kernal. I've contacted Dan before and ordered from him...great asset to us mudders. Unfortunately, this job must be done today so the belts will be outsourced from one of the local chain auto stores:whoops:

I'm not looking at the rig nor is it outside for my to peek, but can someone describe or post a diagram of all the belts and what components they are associated with. The reason i'm asking is because i know the crankshaft has 3 pulleys for the AC belt, Air Pump belt, & the Alternator belt....which leaves me questioning how the 2nd alt belt is attached.
 
IIRC the outermost belt (last one you put on) drives the PS pump, the air pump, then to the outer position of the alternator pulley and the PS idler pulley. Middle belt is fan pulley (inner position), middle crank, inner alternator position. Innermost belt (first one you put on) is AC, AC idler pulley, inner crank position. HTH's.

The oem belts are matched for length and will squeak less than aftermarket belts which aren't paired up. Order the correct belts and put them on at your earliest convenience

Got everything back together (ps belt was a b!7ch) and no squeaks. Thanks for the advice.

I'm posting this for a friend with a 1991 FJ 80

FJ80 3FE motor gets 1 alternator belt folks; from crank to WP to ALT.
You CAN run 2 belts for those 3, but it would make putting the PS/smog pump belt on a real problem.
Only 3 belts on a 3FE.
 
86tuning; are you thinking of the 1FZFE with two matched alternator belts?

jonheld; is there a difference in the belt/pulley arrangement on a FJ-80 versus a FJ-62 both with the US spec 3FE? IDK.

No difference between a 3FE from a 62 vs an 80 as far as belts and most major components. PS pump is different, but in the same location.
They are very close to being identical motors.
 
Is there a definitive thread that discusses the differences?

I have a 1992 FJ80 and found out this past week that the 3fe in mine is out of a 62 and not an 80.
