$2,400 longblock?

Toyota does for some older models. but not all old models of engines. Onur would know for sure.

I feel if I am going to spend 3500 on an engine I might as well just by a new cruiser....but mine is stock with no lockers right now so YMMV. But even if I had lockers it would be hard not to go to a V8 or diesel.

I bet you that is a generic list. Ask them if it applies to the 1FZFE and I am sure it will change. There is no way they can do it for that price, even with aftermarket parts. I am also 100% sure it is not OE parts. I would bet a set of pistons and a crank cost more than the price quoted. We do them with all Toyota OE parts and it comes to $4200 for a long block, even then we re-use the crank, rods, head, block, cams and other re-useable hard parts, but the rest is new Toyota parts.

"built with OEM or higher quality parts"

this is where they can get away with not using oem on more expensive motors like toyotas and this is where there can be a problem. in a chevy, who wouldn't think twice about using fel-pro instead of gm? fel-pro is oem quality or better. i can't say about the fz motors, but on a 2f, there's a good chance that you will blow head gaskets that you wouldn't blow with oem. i have a three for three history with blown felpro headgaskets...twice replaced with oem and no issues again.

i'm all for saving money wherever possible, but that's not one of the places that i would.

Just wordering why people want to take cheP road with a rig that sold for $60k originally?

'94 they were $45K new and I've got the window sticker to prove it. :D :p Other than that, I couldn't agree more.

Engine options

Well as we all know there are lots of choices:

Put in a diesel with new tranny 15k-20K

Put in a 5.3,6.0 with new tranny 13K-15k+

Put in a 4.7, tranny for 12K + (Slee)

Rebuild what you have. 4-6K+

We are dealing with a truck depending on mileage, condition, lockers etc, that is worth between 4k-9K

It is a complex issue for me also. Do you put in a new engine, tranny that cost upwards of 15K in a 9k truck? If so how long would you have to drive it to actually justify the cost? As gas prices go up I'm not longer using my 80 as a DD. I want to use it for my pleasure trips to the big bad Outdoor world. I would also like to pull a 23' Airstream on 2-3K trips, not in the Rockies. I have my trusty Cdn-101 trailer for that.

How do you see it???

Engine

If it's a recreational or road-trip vehicle, why does it ever have to pay off? This is a money-losing game no matter which way you cut it.

Your right of course. I guess it depends on how much money you have to spend on those type things (budget).

I have done really well with my original investment of this 80. Thanks to GUMBY....

Thank you Yohavos and Beno for answering my slightly OT question. I'm in a whole new relationship with my 3FE so I'm doing some contingency planning... just in case.

Checked out a locally rebuilt 60 last summer. Looked sweet on the surface but behind the lift and the headers... *shudder* let's just not talk about it.

PS: If you know someone who does think Jeeps are cool, I've got a 95' with 55K that I'd love to sell. It's only had the tow of shame behind the cruiser once this month. :hillbilly:

Your estimate on the sbc is pretty damn high. You must be factoring in a brand new engine.

Well my LX was just north of $60K I also have the window sticker to prove it :grinpimp: Did I pay that much, well that is another story:ban:

I couldn't have said it better! However, like stated above by respected members. Don't short cut something as important as your motor.

You will never get out of your truck what you put into it. What you do get is the satisfaction that we have a vehicle, even bone stock with street tires, will go nearly anywhere you have the stones to point it and hang on!:steer:

Toyota has one size larger piston but does not offer that in a short or long block. That would be something I would consider.

I agree, tough decisions. Those figures are realistic for quality shop work.

One question is what the truck would be worth after a swap or a full rebuild. I think you could expect it to bring more than $9k if you ever decided to sell.

Just talked to the guy, Eric. The labor to pull the old 1FZ and install the reman is $1050. Cost of the reman is $2400.

That's $3450, call it 9.5% tax or so, 3777.75 out the door.

The reman is all OEM minus the crankshaft (turned by EPW?), the main rod bearings, and the thrust washer.

If your talking about the gm motor yes it was for new.

Yes I'm thinking that makes the most sense. Nice looking dog. Shorthair?
How was the Chukar hunting last season?
