That's a tough call bro.

I know the attachment. Have two dogs and two cats and can't have the clean remodeled house I've been wanting because I'm afraid the animals would ruin even the best of cleanliness.

Different scenario for you:

My first thought was that a new Rottie is what, $400? If your dog has a $3000 personality and you can't wait to see it everyday.....

I think you already know the answers and have made up your mind. I would highly suggest using credit on this expense, however.

Good Luck.

i appreciate all the words of advise both for and against. bottem line is he is my homeboy and hes getting fixed right. i mean he is only a year old so he still had hopefully many years ahead of him, and like i said i can either sell the cruiser when the time comes or just get some loans. i am going to pull real hard to get a scholarship now after this, i just really hope that the expenses can back off for a little bit.
i will probably just apply for some student loans....i wanted to try and get by without them, but whats another debt when your in your mid 20s right?

Wow, you must have some serious disposable income. (edit, I just went and read your post, you're going to blow your college savings on a f*cking animal?!?) There is no animal worth that much money.

Now if it was a steer, and you were paying by the pound...and your were butchering it...that'd be different...and tasty.

this is touching --

Guys, this is going to sound heard-hearted which is sad because I'm just the opposite -- most dogs are better people than most people I know. But that is just because, as someone said wisely above, dogs don't care whether they have three legs or four.

Save that money; let him guard the house while you go to school or take a trip to Hawaii.

I think a life is worth it definately..only exception would be if you seriously had NO money to take care of it and take care of yourself or the family first.. but other than that ..i think u know the answer

Isn't going back to school and getting an education more important? I know about dogs being the wingman and every thing but getting higher education will lead to a better job in the long run, not something you should set back unless you feel that you ultimatley have to.

Eric, you feed that fawker on the furniture? C'mon man....

If you love him do the vet bill, I would for my mutt, but it would be a tough call. This is why I love my non-pure bred mutts. They're like junk yard dogs, nothing hurts them.

HA! you're in for a surprise then... there isn't much 'meat' on that one... just lots of fat. It'll give your dogs the schitts.

Worth Every Penny

Our dog was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer back in January. Since then I have spent about $8,000 on chemo and other vet bills to keep him going. Eventually the chemo will fail and he will lose (likely another 2-3 months) as the cancer stops responding to the chemo. In the meantime my wife, myself, and my son continue to have a great friend, who remains happy, loyal and patient. The $ I have spent pale in comparison to the the companionship he has provided over the last 6 years. He would have and continues to do anything necessary to protect and be a companion. The least I can do is provide him with the best care possible and make him as comfortable as possible. Here is a picture of him in July up in Yosemite.

I'm sure it's been mentioned before.

Pet insurance.

Emma the wunderhund has it. I don't even remember how much it costs it's so insignificant... $25 a month?

Anyway, covers basic care, basic surgery, and specialists up to a certain amount. ($10,000 per year maybe?)

We've been lucky so far, that Emma is a very healthy dog, bred from american and european bloodlines so her gene pool is "deeper," and it really hasn't made that much difference yet cause she really hasn't needed anything other than basic care. But in her older age, it might come in useful. :)

You should definately contact the breader and let them know of this problem, this could be an indiction of a genetic defect in an overbread line. Making them aware of this will prevent this from being propogated along the family line if they are a good breader, if not, it will just continue along and cause more heartache and problems for others.

Thanks. My wife has jokingly started calling our dog X5, as she has been wanting a BMW X5 and each visit to the vet basically would make a payment on one. :D

The vet clinic where my wife used to work accepted Visa and would extend credit. Check on that option.

Good luck

just found out my young rottie is going to need 2-3 thousand in surgery to shorten a growth plate in his front leg that is causing his leg to hyperextend beyond its regular bending point. it looks sick....like everytime he steps on it its going to crack in half.
anyways, i dont know what it is but we have had the worst luck with our two dogs. tyson is a purebred boxer and crash is a purebred rottie and in the two years weve had them weve probably spent 2000 on vet bills alone and now this monster surgery bill coming up is just another kick in the nads. they are both family so we will pay to get whatever needs done done, it is just hard right now becuase i have been saving to go back to school and now i will have to put the 2500 i had saved over the last few months for school to pay for my dogs leg.
i guess cruiser content is that sometime next summer ill be having to sell the cruiser for something more economical. i was planning on keeping it and just carpooling but now i wont even be able to afford tuition and living expenses. boo hoo
the other thing i didnt realize at the time was, the people we bought crash from must have been back yard breeders....i have a feeling this is a sort of genetic thing that you get from mating related dogs and whateever.
stupid me

Mac,

I am sorry to hear this.

I wish I had illness insurance for my pets when they had gotten sick.

NOTE: I AM affiliated with an insurer of pets: Pets Best

I HIGHLY recomend you read up on insurance for your animals.

You can get more info on my company's site: www.petsbest.com

Depending on what state you live in, you can even enroll online. Accident insurance would start at 12:01 AM the next morning, illness in 14 days.

Best of luck to you...

Unfortunately, pet bills are often as high or higher than people bills...

Hey Mods, we definitely need a dog icon smilie thingy!

I disagree.

A total hip for my GSD cost ~$3k (no, I did not have the appropriate income at the time)

I would venture $3k would not even pay for anesthesia for a human hip replacement...

Anyone here had a hip put in? Cost?

im still going to go to school.....it just means that its pretty much a given that i will have to sell the fj to pay for tuition.
thanx for all the advice, i will look into the pet insurance.....i am skeptical though becuase my mom used to have it on our dog and when the time came for storm to have leg surgery they said they wouldnt cover it so ever since then i wondered if there was any point to it if they dont pay out.i know every situation is different but it sure left a bad taste in my mouth.
