Well I finally got to join the club. Picked up a beater to play with. Got her home and trying to assess the damage. The PO says that the motor "jumped time" but i got in there and don't think that is the case. The exhaust valve on #1 was stuck shut, rocker was not even contacting the valve. This could be the cause of his diagnosis. Anyway, I wanted to post some pics and get some opinions on how to move forward. My current plan is to replace timing set, cover, water pump, and oil pump. Run a compression test, and if all looks good, slap it back in and go until it breaks. the PO had also done me a "favor" and tore down the engine bay to the point it was ready to pull out. He was going to do a swap so lets just say his disassembly was not as well thought out as I would have been. I have about $500 in it and want to keep it to a MINIMUM investment.

the day i took it home:

Question: is it normal for there to be this black crap in the intake side of the head:

this is a problem

In pic #3, the rocker isn't contacting the valve because the tappet adjuster is backed all the way out. Can you move the valve? If so, set the cam to TDC and adjust the valve properly. Should be fine.

Yup, did that and the valve seems to work and timing seems on point. I ordered a timing set, oil pump, water, pump from engnbldr, plan to install that. It is a mystery as to how the rocker screw got backed out. Gremlins? Who knows.

Nice score. From the pictures it appears you have scored an 84-85 with a solid axle. You have a very nice base to work with. The black stuff is probably a result of your "stuck" exhaust valve pushing burnt fuel back into the intake.

It kind of reminds me of my 88 4Runner, minus the SA. I will keep an eye out to see how this one takes shape.

Oh and Welcome to MUD. *********************

Yup, 1985 with 22RE. I could hardly pass it up for that price even not running. Body is in poor shape, but it's a woods truck anyway.

Update

Got the timing cover and front end components replaced, only broke 1 bolt on the water pump housing so not too bad for a Saturday.

So i did the rear main seal as well since i had the motor out. I think i need to get a new pilot bearing, so that will be next. I plan to have the motor back in this weekend.

Question: If I only did the Toyota rear seal and gasket with no FIPG, am I asking for leaks? I did not see in the FSM where it said to use both the paper gasket and FIPG, but I may have missed it. Reading online, most people are using both. Also, how are you torquing the crank bolt back to 116 ft/lbs?

did you replace the gasget on the oil pan if not you should put some fipg there, and to torque the crank bolt set the EM brake put the truck in 4 low, and torque the bolt. on the stand it is hard to do.

Not sure which gasket you mean. Your pan takes FIPG only, no gasket.

Snug it up as tight as you can now, then do the final torquing when you get the engine back in the truck. Leave a note on the steering column over the ignition switch so you don't forget.

the felpro kit comes with a oil pan gasket.

...which is another reason that I don't use Felpro gasket kits. They are a "universal" set that tries to fit a bunch of engines. If you get an OEM gasket kit from Toyota for your specific VIN, there is no pan gasket. After 8/84, the lip of the oil pan changed and it is designed to use FIPG, not a gasket. If you put a cork gasket on the later oil pan, it will leak.

The gasket in question is the rear main seal retainer gasket. Oil pan I just used FIPG. Which oil pump bolts leak? I decided to replace the pilot bearing while the motor was out. I tried the wet paper towel trick, it worked but it was a PITA. I would recommend using grease like most folks. I hope to get thing back in the truck this weekend. Any tips to ease the motor back onto the trans and motor mounts? I boogered up the threads on the motor mounts getting the motor out, can the bolts be replaced or do I need to replace the whole mount?

here i will disagree with you, i have used this kit on every engine i regasketed, and all of them including the 86 i have in my truck now has not leaked from the oil pan. oh and i have used them on 2 87's and 1 88, and 1 86, the one i had problems with was the 84, but it blew the rear seal not the oil pan gasket.

Too answer your question I am 97% sure it is the top bolt on the oil pump that must be sealed. Also you have to be careful to put the bolts back in the order they were originally in as some are longer and shorter than others and I dont remember what but the long bolt can thread to far in if put in the wrong place and screw something up.....

i will have to look at the build date on my truck but the oil pan on it and all my others are identical except the drain plug. the 84's was bigger if i recall right.

Look carefully.

The earlier pan has a "ridge" in the sealing surface, it bites into the cork gasket and seals it. It also has the larger drain plug. The EPC shows a gasket in the Cylinder Block diagram.

The later (post 8/84) pan doesn't have this ridge, it has a little depression in the sealing surface, to hold FIPG and make a better seal. There is no gasket in the EPC diagram.

If you want to put your engine together wrong, well that's up to you.

it might be wrong, but it still don't leak, and that is the purpose of both a cork gasket or FIPG.

any who no reason to get in a heated discussion over it, i just disagreed with you, also my 87 block had FIPG before i rebuilt it and it leaked bad around the oil pan, it probably was not done at the factory.
