I have the opportunity to pick up a 86 (I think) 1st gen pretty cheap. Thing is, he blew the head gasket (internally) on the 22RE he has in it (replacement engine), and he ran it hot for "a while". So, although it starts and runs briefly, I have no idea what condition the head is in.

So, before I think about making an offer, I would have to consider that I may need a replacement head for it. What would I expect to shell out for good head?

:D

Good head is pricey! :D
You can get a good used one for about $100 on these boards.
The next option would be to get yours checked and rebuilt. After all that, you could have bought a new casting, assembled head for about $400.00. Around here, the rebuild would cost about $275-$325.
I would just get new, personally, unless I was on a budget.

Looks like $388 for a new head from enginebuilders, plus $30 ride. I would need the gasket, too. Sounds like I could still be ahead on the value of the truck :D. I know that magnifluxing the head I have, which could possibly be OK, would still require shipping it out of town and back. On the whole, maybe $100 to find out I need a new one. A gamble, but probably something to think about.

Thanks, guys!

Dave, that's almost exactly how I bought my '86 4runner. The head was cracked and useless but the engine shop I use here had one they rebuilt. Can't remember for sure, but I'm thinking I gave them around $250 for it.

I called that shop (Jerry's Custom Engines), but they don't have any 22re heads right now. FYI, they resurface for $35 and pressure test for $30. Could be all you need but who's to say. Long-standing reputable and fair machine shop and I have real good relations with them. I'm happy to liason for you if you need it.

ps - Every time I get out of my 1st gen 4runner I say to myself "Man, I really love this truck." They grow on you.

Thanks, Ted. I appreciate the offer. Nice to hear the good words about the 1st Gen, too. :D
