Hi all,
yes I am a newbee,

I have a 1hz engine in my 1995 troopy. its a hzj75rv .. I purchases 2nd hand ex queensland rail when it had 56,000km..on it.. When I got it , I took to percys auto in rocky ..who did all the engine works for Opposite Lock 4wd...I paid about $3k back then and fitted a non intercooled turbo. I fitted a schwitzer 311301...My 1hz has now done just under 500000km...When I had the turbo fitted the pump and injectors got serviced...I believe the setting for mine is 10psi. It gets 14-15litre on a heavy load...and 11--11.5l empty load on the highway..the turbo only needed a replacement t In the vac line...The engine ...had valve sims done 2 times..replaced timing belt every 90K...all original...

When doing some real heavy continuous work...like dragging 3.5 tones from WA to QLD....given I had no rad shroud due to kangaroo smashing it so bad I had to remove it...I had a little overheat with load (which was 10ft from ground and 7ft wide) wind temp (40c plus...)...note my current rad number 2 is 4 core not a 2 core..I had to do so many water cool offs and top offs.

this brought me to realize ..more and better cooling was needed...

mind you my car empty with the shround back.,..can go cold ..if not being hammered...based upon outside temps..

now I wanting to upgrade things to get better proformances when I tow longer distances now..

and first one I thinking of doing is snorkel...I got it and just need to fit it..
second upgrade is I got a oil filter adapter and oil cooler rad with fan...and I plan on installing the oil rad...onto the bottom protector skid plate..cutting a slit to have air come in and having the man switch for fan fitted to it..
third ....I thinking about placing a vent in the bonnet over the turbo...to direct cool air over the turbo...and maybe placing a small 12v fan over the turbo as well....
* this will be my form of intercooling *

Now I know my engine and turbo are getting long in the tooth....and I dought I can get replacement parts for current turbo..
So
I am thinking engine upgrade...
I have a spare 1hz non turbo engine ..with 300000km on it sitting on a pallet....it was my ..just in case ...(backup)

since I prob have to dump the brilliant turbo I have ...due to parts supply issues..

I am thinking about should I stay with 1hz engine base or go 1hdt..
could I mungrol the spare to a 1hdt...and should I
could I do that cheap...since I wanting to rebuilt an engine to fit...so the on ground spare ...could be made a 1hdt or swapped for rebuilt 1hdt......I want to keep costs down..

I am wanting a little more power and hold on or improve my consumption...by going from non direct to direct and going non turbo injectors to turbo injectors..

I like the easy no brainer swap out as well..

Can anyone offer a little here to help me make informed decisions

thanks

phil

There is a company in WA that is converting 1HZ into 1HD T ,I thinks its around $10K

thanks for your input...

that sounds very dear to me....
I have priced a rebuilt engine here 1hz $3600 and 1hdt $4500

my problem is if I go to 1hdt ...I need a dead one to trade...
and I don't know what I need to swap this out in my car...what alterations its needs...

I can easy rebuild the 1hz...only I need a cheap way of getting a a new or remade turbo on it...

whats needed to swap out 1hz with a 1hdt

thanks Phil

Its not cheap ,but if you take into account they are taking a 1HZ and fitting it with 1HD T conrods, pistons, cylinder head, injection pump/injectors and a G Bentink turbo.
As you said ,if you have a dead 1HD T it could be rebuilt for $4500,but they are scarce as hens teeth and they still sell for $3000+ if they are complete and rebuildable.
The last one I enquired about had a ruined crank and they wanted $2800,it went within half a day of being advertised on the net.
They will usually have high klms ,so the pump and turbo will probably be at the stage where they will soon need attention as well and by the time you do all that,it will come to $10k min anyway.

Ive seen some used 1HD T, but they want $8k-$10k for "low" klms units with 3 months warranty

No cheap options here ,except to rebuild what you have.

Are you sure the parts for your Switzer are unobtainable?

Have a look into getting the HZ rebuilt with turbo pistons and hdt rods, I think engines australia sell the parts/ kit to do it. With that and a good cooling system you should be good for a decent amount of reliable power. If you can't get parts to update or rebuild the schwitzer then keep the manifold and the rest of the setup and get an adapter to use a common turbo (T3/CT26).

thanks guys..... from what I worked out...and I am more than happy to be corrected here is the following.....1hz solid ..and goo~d engine 129hp.....with aftermarket set from10psi to a max of 15~~18 160---175hp ..with intercooling maybe 190hp....1hdt uses standard factory fit turbo....160hp with intercooler about 190hp... 1hdt oil cooled pistons , better built in side ...and direct injection..that should give better power and enocomy.... I happy to stay with a 1hz bottom end....I was offered a top end swap out whe I got my last 1hz turboed...which at the time was head and injectors and pump..only....

so here the questions:

I think if my 10 psi turbo schwitzer was doin 150hp--160hp....I like it twigged to 12--15...to see what the difference would be!
I need to be in a troopy with 12--15--18 to feel what the difference is...
( I would not up mine now ..because I could kill the engine and turbo quicker)
how much can you get out of 1hdt I power without intercooling...and what boost psi are they factory set for?

it sounds the cheapest way to get a turbo engine...is a 1hz with a aftermarket turbo...and if you add a intercooler...ypou be close or over 200hp
so $3800 for my engine redo...$4000 for aftermarket turbo and #3500 if you want intercooled and you have a 190hp beast!

but I do like the sound of ""a standard"" if I go 1hdt...because parts for it should be via any Toyota dealer right! and that is handy...if you need parts under a breakdown situ....and I not heard but can a 1hdt ..be twigged to equal a 1hz with dts and optional intercooler ? for output power?

I don't know for sure if my current turbo is reconditionable...I was told that a company bought out schwitzer....and chaged or dumped certain lines of them....so if anyone knows where I be able to get a rebuild on it I be happy for that... I have certainly proven 10psi and 1hz works..long term...without any other adaptions...

but as I said humping a load across WA SA NSW QLD ..does and has shown up a few weakness in my past setup...allowing for shroud issue which frankly I think was the main deal....usually if my engine does a overheat....the first thing that goes off is the air con heat sensor and pressure release on it throws out fridge gas...which I have fluro color....that's because those hopeless clutch fans are bastards ...and your not sure when they are not working 100% until they overheat you several times in a row...of course I had rad swap out...because the stress of overheat does that to a copper unit...

I noticed that when humping across the nully or through the range ..or near the great bite.....when you have a big load and its hot as in 39+ the troopy was struggling...I posted a picture to show you all..:)

Anyway I will await some great feedback :)
thanks phil

here is a new blow out on having a schwtizer turbo and wanting repair....

a average min repair fee $990 a repair with core replacement $1350
a complete turbo new... #1850

this was from Turno Australia

a new 1hz turbo kit....is $2700--3200 depends if you want exhaust...

From what I've read (not personal experience) the HZ can handle a reasonable amount of power , more if its had turbo spec pistons put in. The hdt has much more potential, check out the hdt and gturbo threads.
It seems like its definitely doable to turn a HZ into a hd, but you'll need the pistons as well-direct injection needs the bowl in the piston.

Also sounds like you're fan clutch is slipping, apparently you can refill them with new/different viscosity oil. Clutch fans are pretty good when they're working properly, and less likely to fail then an electric one

before i spent the money on a HDT swap, since i love the 1HZ+T+IC, i would consider a real towing engine swap if you are going to do heavy "brick" tows like the one in the pic on a regular bases.
if it is an occasional tow then rebuild the 1HZ, add a new turbo and intercool with a 2.5" - 3" free flowing exhaust and be done with it.
swap to a 4 core (4 X 1/2" is 2" of cooling) rad or a 3 HD core (3 X 3/4" is 2.25" of cooling and less fins to catch the crud), fixed fan and a good flushing. get the lights off the bumper in front of the rad (why have an air flow block if you have over heating issues?)

just a suggestion
