My truck runs a 4 cyl bulkhead...

A 6 fits fine - I have proof, you have, um, an opinion?

:D

I've seen a few different engines in landrovers and the tricks they used to make them fit. I'm trying to work out what you've done.

A ford 6 cyl 4 litre petrol for example was up against a front cross-member. How did you get around that?

that's tight .. but it is ..

Series or Defender? On a Series, sure, you have to move the front cross member forward. On a Defender it's not an issue. Anyways, I don't want to derail the thread, I just wanted to show that a 6 cyl is very possible if you don't mind doing some minor modifications. Mine had a 4 cyl bulkhead, a massive Banks intercooler, a 3 core rad, a 200 amp alt, power steering and hydroboost, and everything fit quite well, but it was tight and it took a long time to package everything. The new truck is quite a bit better laid out, the 5 speed cuts down on the plumbing (no cooler, kickdown etc).

Here's a video of it on the trail shot by LShobie in Weir Qc... It's been posted here before and the Land-Cruiser guys love to make fun of the broken Land-Rovers!!!

In My case, a Toyota part failed, the FZJ80 rear e-locker motor fried and would not lock the rear end... :D

That ford was in a series 2. There are no where near as many repowered defenders as series around. Probably because the defender engines could make the speed limit.

The defender/RRC/Disco chassis still has that cross-member, it's just a little further forward. My RRC with the 4BD1T has 60mm between the PS pump and the front cross-member. This is just enough to slide the engine off the gearbox and lift it out. I've got 90mm to the front crank pulley.
To the rear I've got just enough clearance to run the turbo crossover pipe between the cylinder head and firewall.
I run stock suspension height with 1 inch longer bump-stops. In a defender you can sit the engine an inch higher and not need any suspension mods (other than firmer springs of course).

I found this again. 1HZ into a RRC. This has a similar chassis to the defender.
Notching of the front crossmember and oil sump. New radiator shunted forwards about 3 inches (body modifications to do that). AC radiator mounted externally and not sure what gearbox he's using.

So we agree then?

You can make anything fit if you're willing to modify enough. I agree on that.

if worth .. that's another story ..

In my mind, this begs the question of,

How hard is it to get parts for the 1HZ?

I would think that would be the ultimate desicion maker, for me at least.

Here in the US, you can get parts for the 4BDT1/2, at the local chevy dealer, probably even Autozone.
That makes the 4BDT very appealing. To me at least.

I thought that the 1HZ was giving MPGs in the mid to high 20's??
Everything I have read about swaps with the 4BDT, says the same thing.

Am I totally wrong here?

I think if parts were easy to get for the 1HZ, it would make it far more desireable.
...aside form the $5k price tag....

Any Toyota dealer can get you 1HZ parts all day long.

If they try....

It's all available here in the States.

beno´s quote answers that. My only problem in getting 1HZ parts was just waiting for them to be shipped but that was when I was in Centam and they always had long wait times for any part not locally stocked. :meh:

Not a problem for most guys but for me now that I´m back in NA is where to get the 1HZ serviced. Not a big guy with a wrench here so where to get the work done on it is a nagging question. If I had swapped in a Cumins it would have been a louder engine that is easier to get serviced here in the US. In the end it seems to always boil down to what you can get your hands on. Again had I done the swap in the US it would have been a Cummins as they are easy to source here. If I ever do one overseas again it will probably be the 1HD-T.:meh:
