Hi all:)

I have fitted my G turbo on to my 12v 80, together with a SS 3" exhaust and cross country intercooler.

It works really great, so far i have set it to 1.3bar max boost and with a quick IP setting i got 0.95bar at 1600rpm. 1.3bar close to 1800rpm.

My 80 finally became fun and exiting to drive.:steer::cheers:.

The most impressive changes are in 4th and 5th gear it feels like it will never stop just keep pushing and speeding up.

The smoke with my IP current setting is very limited.

I got a problem with my EGT probe vs gauges so so far i havent been able to measure it.

I can't wait to try that in African deserts

A big:cheers: for G turbo:steer:

Once I've rebuilt my motor and shoe-horned a front mounted intercooler in there I'm definitely going for one of Graeme's turbos for my 1HD-T... :hillbilly:

can you share your pics install, opinions and comments on Cross Country intercooler .. ?

I will post pics tomorrow.

For teh IC, i am very happy with it, but it had it's fan replaced by a spal.

When i want to play a bit, i just turn on the fan and the IC doesn't seems to heat, even after several run up hill to adjust the fuel screw, i touched it and it felt at ambiant temperature.

To improve it a bit i could work on a bigger scoop (higher) but it already works great like this.

If i had to choose again, i would maybe go for a front mount as G turbo push really well so i think turbo lag would be none existing and cooling might be even better. At the time i bought my IC the front mount wasn't available. Not sure i would actually see a difference, it is just a thought.

I had a minor grinding to do on one of the IC support to fit. The only challenge was that i had to remove the vent hose from the cam cover. I was anyway installing a catch can at the same time so it wasn't an issue for me.

What else to say, this IC works great for me so far:) and is a beautiful piece

Congratulations on your new setup Syche!

I also have Graemes turbo installed in my 80, and get similar or a little higher boost readings than you. But, above 2500 rpms boost drops rather quickly down to 1.05 bars at around 3500 rpms. How does your turbo behave in this rpm-range?

As you, I have 3" SS exhaust. The turbo whine produced at around 2000 rpms is rather annoying in the long run. I have run my exhaust between the transfer and the frame rails, and I wonder if yours is more quiet since it follows the original routing?

Apart from these things I am very happy with the turbo. At normal driving EGTs dropped quite a lot, even after the pump was tuned for more fuel.

Hi Vegard.

I think you got something wrong on yours, the boost should not drop. Mine keeps up all the way up and is probably asking for more:hillbilly:.

I think i have some delay and for sure i have damping on my gauge due to the too soft and too long hoses. but i am prety sure with the curent setting i don't have 1 bar at 1500rpm or bellow. i do valid the 950gr at 1600rpm as my dash red light goes on:idea:

The whistle i have is i believe coming from my turbo tap that has a very short outlet hose and that is pretty much open to control the wastegate opening at 1.3bar. I use the original toyota wastegate at the moment as my G one was unfortunately damaged on delivery.

I should receive a new one in the next weeks and get it replaced.

I hear clearly the whistle coming from the front so i doubt it is coming from my exhaust.

For your boost dropping, you should check your intake manifold, they tend to get loose and maybe your IP setting you might have something wrong there.

Just too bad i can't find a proper 80 with HDT engine down here in China, and 80's are way too f...ing expensive as all toyota's in here:bang:.

Hi Vegard, I have emailed you some options.

Vegard's turbo was the low rpm response versions and his truck has the 1HD-FT - these flow ~15% more air in top rpm. The effect of this, considering with this turbo my aim is to leave nothing on the table at the end of the power rpm range, is that on this engine the boost does in fact drop a bit with rpm. For example, it will drop from 20psi set pressure that you should get from ~ 1500rpm to 16psi by 3500rpm. On the 1HDT however, if you set for 20psi by 1500rpm, you should find still 19-20psi by 3500rpm.

Now Syche has an upgraded compressor wheel and flows 9% more air than yours. As a result, I expect that he can hold ((1.05 +1) * 1.15 * 1.09))-1 = 1.57 Bar *14.7 = 23psi. Lets say 21-24psi.

On the 12HT, of course the maximum boost is even higher and on the 13BT it has been pushed to 30psi (not that I reccomend it).

Syche also isnt getting the low rpm response yet, however that is predominantly not because of the compressor wheel change, it is simply he was in a big rush and didnt complete the tune before he had to leave. So he will see the big low rpm boost very soon.

The compressor wheel noise is changed by simply changing the wheel and now all compressor wheels are quiet.

Some people actually prefer to turbo whistle being louder than usual.

Regards, Graeme

Syche, you should get home from China in order to tune your pump :) Thanks for answering. The sound from my turbo is not the the sound of an air leak, it is definitely a turbo whine. Seems Graeme has a cure for that now.

Graeme, I read your emails and liked what I read, thanks. Good to see an explanation to the boost drop. As you know I tried quite a lot of things to make it hold boost, but if the engine breaths too well there is no more to do I guess (maybe remove the IC :D ). About the sound, it is not at all annoying on a short trip, but when it is present for hours of steady speed driving it really makes me (and my wife) tired.

I should add that Graeme's support of and the interest he takes in his customers is outstanding. I have never witnessed anything like it. He truly wants you to be happy with his products.

The fact is that i only spent 2 hours working on my IP, and that including the small machining s i did to make the boost compensator to work better.

I went right through from G advises and made small adjustment then. So, sure there is more to get out of it, but as i mentionned before, i need first to get proper hoses on my gauge, no tunning without proper readings:D. and...i need time:grinpimp:

But again, my 80 is transformed, what a pleasure to drive now:steer::cheers: and has vegard says....:cheers: for the great support from G, he really make the difference:cheers::cheers:

Graeme, we are still waiting for you kzt G turbo:popcorn: :D when will it come out:bounce:?

Hi Graeme.

Well being in China the last 6 months, the 80 is only doing it's 20km every second week to keep it oiled. Thanks to my father takign good care of it:cheers:.

Well, he does enjoy it, as he said, it is smooth and stealth on normal driving, but if you need, just push it down, :steer: it takes off:D.

I will be back there in 3 weeks and for 3 weeks, i will tell you some more. I i am so impatient, 6 month away from this toy, can't wait to drive it again:bounce:.

Now being here, and with a lightweight chines Suv on 2.4 mitsu gas, i was biting my fingers and got a supercharger kit for it:D, Alpine SA. I not mounted yet, but soon:) and also some pretty good figure apparently. but way much more expensive than your turbo:whoops:.

Any updates on the 4bd1T:)

What do you mean by Gloss off yet? any better to be expected? As my Chinese SUV, passed 15 000Km, now it breath very much better

G'Day Adam, its been 8 months since the turbo install, how is it going and has the gloss worn off yet? ;)

Still smiling!

I haven't been posting for the last month or so, very busy moving our production shop but it will be done by the end of the year and I might finally get some time to start into the projects I have had lined up for quite some time. Completely redoing the liquid-air intercooler is at the top of the list.

In the mean time, daily driving my rig around the city is just fantastic. Our company owner asked if I wanted a small car just for buzzing around town and I actually said no. :)

I don't really know what else to say - every time someone asks how I feel about it I'm at a bit of a loss for words, other than to say that I love it. Completely different vehicle to drive.

Nothing but gain, no loss anywhere, as far as I'm concerned this upgrade is an absolute no-brainer.

Oh yeah, and I love it!

Hi All.

I am just back in France, Man this 80 is really cool to drive now.

I am just enjoying it:steer:.

It really got a hell of a power from down low and all the way up.

I will be doing long highway cruise soon so iw ill be able to give mroe feedback on mileage, but so far good. 13.5l/100km on short trips less than 50km average, start and stop in around town, That include the hammering i did for setting up my IP for almost a half day on a hill nearby and having fun driving it. All this with 1.5bar in the tires which is the only way to keep a bit of grip out of my 6 years old BFG mud that are quite dry due to several trips in africa:hillbilly:.

I just cutter the tires to get them biting the ground a bit more and it seems to work ok so far, let see on snow and packed snow where they were just not derivable last year;).

It is really hard to get all that torque and power to the ground:grinpimp:.

And the 12V 275mm clutch can't take it, time to upgrade for the 24V 300mm one and with a higher specs pressure plate.:wrench:.

Drving in african dunes will be just as a highway ride:cheers::steer:.

Graeme:cheers::).

If you could make a turbo with a power band 200~300rpm lower (full boost at 1300~1400rpm) even with loss over 3200~3500rpm, that would be a monster:), not quite sure if the manual gearbox woudl appreciate thought:confused:. but fun it would be:D.

On mine i don't feel any power difference from 2000 to 3600rpm, it like a very high flat torque curve and it push the same way no matter what rpm i am, i rarely rev over 2500rpm, not to say 2000 as it really doesn't need it to keep up or even faster than the traffic:)

Guys sorry to hi-jack this, but I ultimately want to do the same and get a new turbo. My symptoms are the same as what Adam wrote...

I have 2 questions:

1. Where to you set the turbo boost on the standard turbo?
2. I agree with the fuel setting, the guys in South Africa tend to only set this, then in traffic everyone is full of black smoke, so the question is, about EGT, what is a good EGT vs Turbo boost?

I send Graeme an message to send me more details on his turbo options so I can get that...

scalci,

Graeme is travelling away at the moment and may not reply quickly

In the meantime, I'm thinking you'll need to understand what you are dealing with a bit more.

I've got my own build up website at http://www.peoplehelp.com.au/landcruiser/12h-t_power_boost.html where there are photos and descriptions of what to do.
