Get the JDM A442F auto, the jdm model in the earily 90's was a full hydro version, which means no tps, no selnoids etc. ... ive put a few k's on mine on and off road and altho it tends to kick into OD a little eairly (around 65km under lite accel) it can be adjusted to suite.

A440 . ?

All A442 are not electronic . ?

thats rite, full hydro A442F. I live in canada where we are able to import these machines as long as there 15 years old. I have a 1991 vx limited from toyko with the 1HD-T diesel, beautiful truck. 60,000km on it when i got it and it drives flawlessly, ill attach a pic of the firewall plate for your viewing pleasure.

And here's a potential (though possibly crazy) solution for the H55F:

Ranger Overdrive

I don't actually know if you can fit these on an H55F -- they were primarily made to add to 4-speed gearboxes -- but it occurs to me that the Ranger would conveniently move the gearshift 7.5" inches back, plus give me a REALLY tall 5th gear (approx 0.61), which would only be good for highway cruising at 70+mph but be a nice MPG booster. And I'd still have the H55F low low first gear.

great truck .. electric winch .?

Did you have lockers on those axles .. ? ( coz the axle code in your firewall plate )

I have an A442F .. but it have solenoids inside .. your could be too ..

Those are 9.5 .. nice for the rear but the real issue comes on the 8" front hi pinion 3rd ..

Yes it does have factory locks, fridge, ice maker (which works exclent, 18 ice cubes in 35 min!) and yota factory winch....... toyota had good intensions with that but at only 8000lbs its a little undersized for a suv its size. And the trans is full hydro, no electronics ... no O/D button or nothin. I looked for about 2 years for this truck and finaly got what i wanted (also had only just over 60000km ). Only thing i didnt like was the color, thinking of going over the factory red portion with darker grey later.

there was a Czech-spec HDJ80 in the U.S. that had 3.7:1 gears, stock. must be by country.
AFAIK all the regular imports in Europe had 3.73 in manual diesels. At least mine does :D
As for the manual vs auto, well I'd only take the auto for city or technical offroad stuff. The manual really enhances the "monster torque" 1HDT experience, although the gap between 3rd and 4th is a bit wide, and the O/D is a bit short on my H151. Oh well after 3500kms of heavy towing in 3 days I still like it a lot :flipoff2:

Can you take a pic of your injector pump? I wasn't aware that there was an A442 the didn't have a TPS.

The H150 was the more fragile 5-speed. It came stock behind a (non-turbo) 1HZ. But, it does have a lower first gear (4.5:1 or so). The H151 is very strong, came stock behind the 1HDT, 1HDFT and 1HDFTE; It has something like a 4:1 first gear. An H55F can be mated to a 1HDT, BUT... the shifter would be very far forward in an 80. It's been done (well, a 12HT w/H55F) in an 80, but it takes some fancy bending.

You might consider an 1HZ with aftermarket turbo. Lynchmob has one for sale, along with an H151 tranny, here: https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-jdm-parts/219395-12h-t-1hz-engines-available.html. The 1HDT and 1HDFT motors are hard to come by these days. Japan4x4 (Dave Stedman) and ENS Cruisers (in B.C.) will be your best bet for parts once you have made the conversion.

I completly disagree with you the 150 and 151 are identical ecept for the low 1st gears so everything else is the same which means the same strength same specs etc. Also it was offered behind the turbo models if order that way, just usually the work trucks that needed the low gear were not turbed but it was an option.

Cheers,

Michael

Interesting to determinate it ..

But the offroad.com site ( not saying it's true or not ) have the following numbers ..

H150 1st = 4.529
2nd = 2.464

H151 1st = 4.01
2nd = 2.294

Both 3rd are 1.49

H55, Marks gears 1.05, 35's, 4.11 - your top speed will be 73.4 unless it's a big downhill. That's behind an hz, safari turbo.

well, if anyone would know... it'd probably be you. That's good info; though the Aussie seem to bash the H150. If I ever blow the H151, I plan to replace with an H150 then; anything to get lower gears.

with an H150 and the Marks' 3:1, I could have 55:1 (instead of my 40:1).

3.73 were standard on the HDJ80 5 spd in Austria (as in Sound of Music, not Kangaroos), in fact it was the only ratio available in Austria at the time I picked up the Toyota brochure in 1996.

Hey your serial number is like only 30 before mine! Non electronic A442F as well.

80series have a 8" hi pinion front diff, so they wont work in the front. Also 3.7 might not be great depending on tyre size (sorry, tire for you guys :whoops:)
In Oz, 80s came out with 4.1 diff gears, with 35" tyres you get approx 10% increase in gearing, with 35"s 4.1 is just a little high, 5th gear is often just slightly too high for highway speeds, the engine is running just outside its optimum RPM so you end up using 4th more often, and use more fuel.
A higher overdrive ratio, or higher diff gears would make the problem worse.

they do make 3.7 gears for the 8" high pinion, in fact my 96' HDJ80 (from Chez republic) came stock with 3.70 gears (it also had the H151 Trany in it).

Cheers,

Michael

thanks for the info .. should be pretty interesint if you can source the part # for those 8" hi pinion 3.70 .. ( not for me sure .. :D )

Do you want the Toyota part #'s or just some aftermarket, I am sure I can get them in pretty short order.

Cheers,

Michael
