The 1HD-T engine in my 80 series has been ticking randomly shortly after I bought it 3 years ago. I had posted the story before:

https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/242027-my-hdj81-saga.html

Well, it has been 3 years and about 60,000 km before I found what made it tick. For some reason whenever I use 10W30 dino oil (Shell Rotella), the ticking comes on and when I switched to the winter oil (Chevron Delo 5W40 synthetic) it goes away (or very very much reduced).

It is warming up here and last week when I switched from 5W40 to 10W30, the ticking came back in a matter of seconds.
I also recall, it happened for the first time ever, when I changed the oil that came with the truck to local 15W40.

Now, what is the source of the ticking, or what can I add to the oil to make it go away, I really have no idea. But it did not cause any problems for the past years. But sure would like to get rid of it whatever it is coming from...

Any ideas?
P.S. There is no ACSD on the IP and the BEB's have been changed. So, these can be ruled out..It is something to do with the oil definitely..
Another P.S. Here's another thread with similar issue, oil seem to play a factor there too:

I would run Delo 5W40 year around too, but it is too bloody expensive :crybaby:
I leave it for winter only and it has been a champ for cold starting..

How much is it there? Here is 136 or so a pail.

It is expensive but I don't drive lots either, I have put on just over 8000kms since June when I got the truck.

I buy it from UFA (United Farmers of Alberta), they seem to be the only place who carries it around here. As far as I remember, last time it was ~ $23 for 3.78L jug and the truck takes about 2.5 jugs.

Thanks for the tip, I'll see what difference i get when i change my oil in the next few weeks. Mine makes a soft ticking noise as well and I've been curious as to what its been. I also removed the acsd and have replaced my beb's.

I find mine does it more noticeably right after an oil change and it slowly fades as the mileage increases on the oil. By the time i hit around 3-4k on the oil it is non existent. I believe others have noticed this as well.... none the less frustrating.

I get the clicking once in a while too, but it seems to do it when the weather is colder. I haven't changed the oil yet, so I can't blame it on that?

Does the ihdt have flat tppit lifters, if so most dino oils do not have much if any zinc left in it. I had the same thing on my 1hz. So now when I change my oil I add a zinc additive. i use Lucus seems to solve most of the problems
