Check this out. So I removed the Harmonic Balancer, replaced the Main Front Gasket & Oil Pump Cover Gasket. I used a 14mm socket on a 1/2" breaker bar to pin the Flywheel thru the access port behind the oil pan. Worked fine to break the front bolt loose that fastens the HB to the crankshaft. When I went to retorque to 305ft-lbs, the crank would only rotate CCW, and would lock after only a few degrees of CW rotation. This meant that it would lock before the the breaker bar was even touching the side of the access port. Couldn't figure out why this was happening, so eventual I just started to press harder on the torque wrench until it hit 305. Still was locked solid, but only trying to turn CW. Then I pulled up on the timing chain & cam gear... The crank turned freely CW! Somehow the timing chain was getting bound up on one of the guides or tensioners, and would only prevent the crankshaft from rotating CW. But if I lifted up the cam gear a little, it would clear the obstruction and rotate freely... Anyone ever come across this? So weird!

this is one of the weirdest threads ever.

Did you get it resolved?
Agreed.
Yes. She has been purring along for months now. Whole project took a total of 3 weekends. I think that it picked up a little more high-end power with the head work & injector cleaning.

Great!

Were you able to take up Freds on his offer to tour his property? :)

Not yet. Next time I'm in SE Ohio I'll have to lay some burnouts in his yard :steer:

Hi mudders,
What work should be done while the head is off my '94 FZJ80? It has nearly 200,000 miles, and I just wanted to hear any thoughts on other work that should be done at this point. I have the OEM complete engine gasket kit, and FSM. Here is what else I plan to do now:
Valve Job
Clean Injectors
Replace Belts

As for resurfacing the head, I took a straight edge to it and looks fine. Should be good without machining it, right?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry to resurrect here, but could you tell me what the silver cylinder is in the top right section of the picture close to the fire wall? It has two hard lines right below it that run along the engine toward the front of the vehicle. What are those lines and that cylinder? I am trying to track down an oil leak; I have seeps of what looks like motor oil on those lines? Are they coolant lines?
