Hi everyone, I'm new to the for forum and wanted to introduce myself. I have a 94 Landcruiser that I inherited from my family. Its got just over 330,000 on the clock and after inspection, low compression. I'm wanting to do a complete engine rebuild and am looking for recommendations on rebuild kits and any words of wisdom from those who have done it.

Great to be part of the forum.

How does the engine run now?

Who did the compression checks, got numbers?

Smoke/vapor out the exhaust pipe, rough running/idling, no power??

Oil looks milky, oil in coolant (head gasket leaking)??

IME it's hard to find anyone who has experience rebuilding these engines correctly (except FJ80 Oregon and a few others scattered around
the country).

One way to do it is have your original block cleaned and machined as needed, ditto for the head.
(tip: there's an oil pump bushing that can get damaged by hot tanking the block)

Generally speaking with few exceptions, use OEM parts only.

If money is tight look for a used engine (check Classifieds here) that runs well and doesn't knock/smoke, run it as is, or have a (good) machine shop
check/machine the head as needed (and replace the valve stem seals) before you stuff it all back into the vehicle.

There's about 9573 posts on the subject so start reading.

ps: I made that number up ;) (but it's huge).

Engine runs like crap right now. Low idle and shakes when i put it into gear, low power. Compression was as follows: Cyl#6 122 Cyl#5 122 Cyl#4 130 Cyl#3 150 Cyl#2 150 Cyl#1 155
Oil looks good, not milky and coolant is clean.

Thanks for the response and advice, I will defiantly be reading up on the forum.

Was it religiously maintained by your family member? The sensors are nearing its shelf life staring with the TPS.
Maybe a good tune up with OEM parts. You're at the lower end of the compression spec but not bad for a tired 330k! If the 80 were given to you or purchased it almost free, I would either invest on a turn-key rebuilt engine or LS it.

It was very well maintained the majority of its life until my cousin borrowed it and ran it very low on oil. My Grandfather bought the truck brand new in 1994 and it has been owned by him and my parents all its life.
I will definitely look into turn key rebuilt options. Any good sellers you would recommend?

As previously stated, talk with @Fj80oregon he is in, you guessed it Oregon and knows these engines. I see you are in Idaho so a trip to him might not be that bad unless you are in Eastern Idaho.

I would suggest messaging him (he already chimed in) and see what you are looking at cost wise. Other than that follow some of the other suggestions.

Current wisdom is that a new short block is cheaper than a rebuild. I'd buy a new head, too. From my in depth (5 minute) analysis, that's also cheapest: total cost, $5k, from your dealer.

Assuming you can rebuild it to spec and you have the tools, add pistons and rings....ect and HG kit. The cost will no longer be 5k, It will add-up plus your weekends. Rebuilt turn key will run you between 7-8k, to me that's a bargain. Just sayin.....
