Hey there,

A few weeks ago a coworker donated his '94 Toyota to me because it died on him. Understood he has 341K miles on it. The truck is solid in respect to body, interior, and undercarriage and has BFGs with around 5K miles. It appears he changed the timing belt not too long ago but preliminary check indicates belt broke. Now with that high mileage and the fact that the 3.slow is not the best Toyota engine, what are my options? I've read the 3.4 swap may be an option but realistically can I find a low to moderate mileage engine to swap in? Come on, everyone uses the snot out of Toyotas! To give a bit more reference, I would consider to invest $2-3k but no more, I got an 80 that I would rather spoil and would not really have time to wrench until late spring/summer. Ain't scared to get in there. Hope you guys can and are willing to provide some guidance. Worst case scenario, sell as is, and if so how much? I have attached some pics. It is a manual transmission. Thanks

You won't want to do a 3.4 swap unless you can rewire and repin, weld, do lots of mods to get everything in there. And I doubt the whole swap would be under 2k. Honestly I'd find another 3.0 to drop in. Yes they aren't the best, but lets not start that debate.

Exactly what I fear, thanks for brining me back to solid ground. To find a decent 3.0 will be a challenge, right?

You said that it just died, what exactly do you mean by that? You could easily rebuild an engine for the amount you're thinking of spending.

Was not there but the guy said that it just died on him while driving; No spark and the distributor rotor does not turn. He had enough and just asked me to go pick it up. I may be getting ahead of myself. Best case scenario that it's the belt or something simple. I was looking at a worst case scenario. 3.4 swap as noted is getting in to deep and 3.0 rebuild not very appealing to me. Maybe if I would get lucky in getting her running with the original engine after belt change or finding a healthy drop in. Knowing that it's not an interference engine makes me optimistic. Thanks.

Good advise! Anyone know of a downloadable FSM for that year?
