Frank Sanatra and a manifold install goes so well...” It’s such a lovely day”.... FYI all manifold fasteners can be accessed with a box end wrench.

Been following this one. Congrats on the solution! Was repairing the injector harness not possible/feasible? I'm just curious why you ran all new (besides the fact you you had a complete harness)

Yes

To follow up: the 80 is finally back together and running well. One thing to note is that the new harness is shorter in that section from the firewall to the #6 injector. This makes it impossible to keep the harness away from the egr tube. In fact, it’s running right between the egr nut and small heater hose and very close to both. I installed the egr valve but it’s disabled so ....
If you’ve installed a new engine harness you know how difficult it is to route that O2 sensor wire up an over the transmission. It is a bitch but doable.

She started up quickly and ran well but smoked. The Super high 1600 rpm cold idle was gone and replaced by a quick bump to 1200rpm and then a rapid drop to below 1000. Perhaps a little slow but fine by me. May have to do with the fact I also installed one of my spare 1994 ecm’s.

She smoked and smoked and smoked. Started making me nervous so I responded by locking the idle at 2k rpm with the hand throttle. 15 minutes later the smoke cleared. It must have been left over Lucas product that I used to clean the TB and manifold.

Perhaps the most satisfying aspect of putting in this effort is that is was actually worth doing to an engine with 301k miles.

Steve, when I get around to the harness rebuild I am going to make sure problems like this are eliminated. It’s crazy that the harness is within one inch of that EGR tube, let alone touching it! I think splitting it and sending the connectors that go below the intake manifold continue down the firewall and then come across under instead of going down between the runners will greatly reduce the diameter of the bundle in that area.

My understanding is the OBD2 harness does this?

Will find out this winter how the harness tear down/rebuild goes!

I’m sure many who follow would appreciate your professional insight with regards to an improved 1993- 1994 engine harness. I will suggest being generous with wire reach. Extra wire can be contained and kept safe, whereas, minimum length can cause undue forces on the harness.

All part of the plan! 😉

Sorry that I missed your post. Repair is always feasible. Yes, I ran a new harness because I had it. The harness that I removed was I very good condition aside from the injector wires that were damaged on my account.

There may be a possibility that a member will be offering overhauled engine wire harnesses. He requested that I send him an old one so I sent him an old and very beat up 1994 harness from my departed green machine. @fjbj40.

Thanks for the reply. All good man, I have pending harness repairs that I am working on building up the courage to start. Glad you got yours fixed.
