I have a 1992 toyota pickup. It has the codes 51 & 52 it also smokes black. it will idle but anything over that it back fires. the timing chain was just replaced the timing marks were on the marks the dist. is set at the factory setting 8 degrees. what do i do? I have tried different air boxes, coils, throttle body with tps, it has new plugs, wires cap, rotor, and spark plug wires on it. Thanks

Back firing is a preignition problem.... Are you 100% sure the ignition timing is correct (did you jump the test connector to set the timing? Are you sure the timing chain was put on correctly? It's easy to get it off a tooth or 2 without knowing. Which, if off the wrong direction could cause some of that...

I'd Also change the O2 sensor, and maybe swap distributors with a known working one...

The 52 Knock sensor code is probably related to the preignition problem...

the timing marks on the cam were lined up with the mark on the rocker assembly. i did jump the connector and i set it at factory spec 8 degrees. the o2 sensor is off a truck with no problems. the same with the distibutor. thanks

First off, what os your engine? If it is a 22re, then 8 degrees is wrong. It should be 5 degrees.

And here is the #1 question in my mind...did it run fine before the new chain??

i realized that i typed 8 degrees instead of 5. It ran the same with the new chain as with the old chain. i had other good air box lid and now it has a code 41 which is for the tps and it has fouled another set of plugs.

That may be the problem, this is how the timing marks are supposed to be at TDC, it's confusing for sure....

I am confused about something.

You said the dist. (which I assume means distibutor) is set at 8 degrees which you later changed to 5 degrees.

The distibutor is not set to 5 degrees. It is set based on the timing marks being aligned and the firing of the #1 cylinder.

I would remove the dist and reset it to make sure it was done properly.

By the way, who did the work on your truck in the first place? Why are they not fixing this issue?

how can you set the cam at 5 degrees. i know how to set the timing on this truck. I did the work on the truck. i found the timing chain stretched to the end of the tensioner so i replaced it. but the truck is still smoking black.

???

You dont set the cam to 5 degrees.

New chain goes on according to alignment specs. Alignment is based on TDC. You should have started at TDC before you did anything. At that point, the dist was removed and should have been pointing to (if I recall) #1 cylinder. And I dont mean literally. I mean set to fire on #1.

Can you confirm that this is the case.

How many chains have you done? Was this your first one?

i retimed the truck when i got home i set it at 5 degrees ignition timing and it wouldn't hardly run so i turned the distributor until it sound like it was running fairly good and the timing was about 25 degrees from 0. runs better but still has no power and it still smokes but not as bad.

I set the cam just like the picture and thats what i got. i tried to set the distributor on number one spark plug so i could get 5 degrees and had to move it so i could it it to run. I think i need to try and move the cam gear back 1 tooth to the right and retry timing it again.
