1992 FJ80 Timing Chain

A prospective buyer for my 1992 FJ80 says he'll have to immediately replace the timing chain due to mileage (220k miles). There is no indication the chain is bad. Does this make sense? I don't think a timing chain is something you replace proactively unless their are warning signs.

The 3FE absolutely does NOT have a timing chain. It has gears.
From the Toyota Factory Service Manual:
"The camshaft is turned by the crankshaft by means of
the timing gears. To rotate the camshaft once, the
crankshaft must rotate twice because the camshaft
timing gear has twice as many teeth as the crankshaft
timing gear."

The FSM calls for checking valve clearances every 15K miles.
Not that I have ever done it that often, but you might want to give the old girl a break after 34 years.
Valve cover gasket 11213-61020
Valve cover grommets (4) 90210-13001
Replace all rubber. After 34 years, those parts don't owe you anything more.

Thanks, is that typically something that is done by a mechanic during a scheduled service? If so maybe I spoke too soon as I am pretty religious about servicing the truck. I just don't recall a reference to checking valve clearance on the service sheet. But I will check.
