hi i just purchased a 1991 landcruiser everything works great but it pops out of low gear every now and then. is it a adjustment or is my transfer case bad?

Check motor mounts and tranny mount

Is the t-case shifter knob hitting the console?

Try removing it (just unscrews) and see how close it is, and if it stays in gear with it removed.

Just to be specific, what exactly is happening here? Is the transfer case lever jumping out of low range or is the transmission shifter jumping out of low gear?

It would be very difficult for the transfer case to change under load assuming the shifter was fully engaged.

Make sure that the Tcase linkage is properly adjusted. This is easy to check: crawl under the vehicle and have someone play with the shifter from inside the cab. Notice that the linkage is slotted and you may have to simply adjust this area a little bit. The actual shifter lever has no detents or stops, it just sweeps smoothly front front to back if were to disconnect it from the Tcase linkage.

i tryed finding the transfer case adjustment under the car and couldnt find it and help would be appreciated

T-case adjustment linkage is above the transfer case, between the t-case and the body.

Not easy to get to unless you have tiny hands and are good working blind.

Transmission adjustment is easily found on passenger side...don't confuse the two.

Hopefully this pic will help. It's hard to see the threaded portion of the linkage but it's there. This is probably not a common thing that needs to be adjusted.

Do you feel the "notchy" feeling of the Tcase shif lever when you go from H N L?

I know this is old but maybe this will help in the future. The range linkage can be gotten to from up top by removing the shifters. I disconnected my range linkage and It stopped jumping out of gear. Tomorrow I will buy a 12mm crows foot and adjust the linkage. Also keep an eye on the relationship between the rod and pin on the shift lever. Since there is not a ball joint here make sure it fits square. No binding.

Here's more. After adjusting and reinstalling the linkage the problem came back. I found out the in my case there is a right way and wrong way to pin it. Rotating the rod 180 allowed for a better fit on the pin of the shift lever. But I think the real problem stemmed from the fact that there are three rubber boots on the shift lever one on the tower, one one the floor board and another one on top of that. When the lever is in low these boots work as springs trying to push the lever into neutral. I got rid of two boots and the problem went away. As fa as motor mounts being the problem I don't see how. The xfer case is mounted to the xmission and so is the shift tower. When one moves they all move.
