So I just got a stock 89 Toyota pickup. Best thing in the world. I change tranny fluid oil and had to redo the valve cover gasket. Had the oil pan gasket done as well. Put on new belts and a new radiator. Old one blew its top. Not joking. After that my truck had to be jumped about 7 times so I hooked up a multi meter and found out my alternator was dead. It was working to good. Now I have a new one in and will be fixing my two codes soon. A 41 engine code and a 62 tranny code, nothing to serious. But my question is has anyone had an alternator go in them? If so did anything besides that go? I love this truck but I'm at $600 in the 3 months I've had it. It's a 22-re with an automatic transmission ( not sure how that one happened ). And does anyone know where I can get a cheap number 1 solenoid? I'm not a fan of spending 200 for a single part. Ill be uploading pictures of my truck tomorrow.

Welcome!

Doesn't sound at all out of line for a truck that's a quarter century old. Love it and support it a part at a time. Lots of parts sources - some of this is still available new. Of course alternators go out - everything can go out. You surely knew it was a project when you bought it, right?

Lowe Toyota is a great source for parts and expertise:

What's amazing to me is that no one before you took the name "Mudder"...

I knew it'd be a project. As I was going to do a fair amount to it, just wasn't expecting it to start this soon. With it being fall/winter in the US. Thanks for the info! And I was surprised that no one had either.

So here's some shots of the body. I'll be getting pictures if the engine tomorrow. Spent today putting in the alternator and new fuses.

Just remembered I had started this thread and wanted to update it. I bought new tires for my truc. Went with 31's since that's what my truck came with. I have 4.56 stock gears. Have had the TPS replaced put in a new alternator and radiator in my truck. The old radiator blew up. The whole top tank split, had a 1 in gap. Put on new belts and replaced my front main seal while I was in there. I then found out on my transmission solenoids was bad. Fixed all 3 of those and redid the filter and gaskets. Put in a new washer pump, the old one was dead and I need a new one to help remove the mud from my truck’s windshield. Next on my list is the redo the front and rear dif oils and do the transfer cases oil while I’m in there. After that it’s on the funs tuff. I’m planning on building tube bumpers for my truck and will post a build for that. And I’m debating between two warn winches; the 8274 and the 9.5ti.
A lot of it has to do with which one I can get. I also plan on running a dual battery set up and was wondering, do anyone know of a good place to store a 2nd battery underneath these hoods? After all that I plan on doing the Timing chain since it hasn’t been done for who knows how long. It’s hard to believe my truck has 201k miles and hasn’t been rebuilt. If anyone has some other input on things that should be done it’d be great to hear about it. I’m also adding stuff to my list of things to do.

I don't think that 200k without a rebuild is very uncommon. From my experience with the pickups (22r/22re) is that as long as you do your basic routine maintenence they will last a very very long time. My last engine was abused beyond belief, and it ran up to 223k with no rebuild or anything. I don't even think I changed the oil the last 15k I ran it. And even after the timing chain rubbed through and started litterally squirting oil/water out of the side of the motor, I ran it for another 500 miles or so. It wasn't running worth poo though lol. As for the dual battery setup, I think you can modify your air intake on the drivers side, and put the second battery where the afm goes.

Well another amazing thing is that at 201k I'm supprised the head gasket has t gone for the simple fact my engine over heated to the point of blowing my rad at 70 mph, for about 2 minutes it wasn't getting any coolant.

Sent using a phone with auto correct

Well finally made some more progress got a new timing chain in and then sent it into have my front and rear bumpers made. Running a belleview up front and a 9.5ti in the rear with 12voltguy's dual winch/dual battery. Will post pics of bumpers in a week or so. Still being worked on. Future plans include a SAS 35's on bead locks dual elockers front and rear along with a warn 8274 and selling the belleview since I wanna rock crawl. Not sure yet. Will have either 5.29's or 5.71's and either putti g in an inch worm adapter or going with an a340F tranny. My plans are still 2 years out. I'm hoping to have this don't and graduate high school and then drive all the way to Moab to rock crawl. So far not much til it's done for this summer. Only about 3 or 4k depending on how much the tranny costs.

Well I ended up finding this beauty on Craigslist . paid 500 for her and she's gonna be welded to the frame. My truck goes in next week for the rear bumper and my dual battery kit should be here next week from 12voltguy.

I got my rear bumper all welded up and now just an waiting to still the holes to mount the winch then I'll put in my dyak battery setup and my in can controls for both winches. 12 volt guy makes some wonderful stuff and his custom work is fantastic

Well, I'll be posting more in this thread hopefully, just rolled her last night. Crushed to front of the cab and drivers door and fender bent my front winch bumper back and I'm just waiting for insurance to total it then I'm going to try to fix it if I can.

I may fix it up. The roof of the cab wasn't bad and I believe the pillars are fine. The fender door and hood are my only issue and then all the wiring the fire dept cut.

Guys, please be careful. This was only at 20 mph and down a 20 foot drop

I'm buying it back and then going to go buy an 85 and use what ever I want from it. I'm partial to the auto tranny now

It stayed inside the spot behind the drivers seat.

Here's "Sully's" roof now. Just used my feet with the help of my buddy. And she's good again

that's ugly, glad you're ok.

Been there so maybe a little help. I rolled 89 single cab last Oct to the point it needed a new cab. I found the replacement cab on CL for $200 so I cut the old cab off at the base of the A-Pillar and then again across the back about 6" above the floor and grafted in the new cab. Removing the old and fitting the new cab took an afternoon, doing all the tack welding took 2 weekends but turned out far better than hoped.

best of luck
