Hi,
I have been lurking on this excellent site for quite some time now and have decided its time to pop my cherry. My history with the 40 series began in 1984 when I had a 1982 bj42. I worked as a rigger on TV masts in those days , mostly on mountain top sites with limited road access. We tried ever type of 4x4 from Landys to Nisaan patrols to Mitsubishi Shogun's , none of them could cope with the terrain so we switched to the Land Cruiser which were not very common then, it was an instant success and I never looked back. It was virtually unstoppable , nothing else came close to how it performed in these conditions. It was my everyday driver on the mountains and socially. Sadly , we replaced it with a 70 in 86 and that was the lsat I saw of her. I always promised myself I would get one again, fast forward 30 years and i have done just that.

I bought an Aussie BJ42 LX (84) last December and I have been driving it ever since and enjoying every minute of it. I remarked to a friend when I first drove it that I remembered them as been more roomy inside, especially the gap between my belly and the steering wheel, he replied diplomatically , that, maybe my shape might have closed the gap changed over 30 years ?

Before you guys in the Southern hemisphere start having a go at me for robbing a piece of your heritage , I didn't , I bought it of the guy who robbed you ?
If it makes you feel any better, he robbed me as well????

I have done nothing with it bar a few essential fluid changes etc since I got it and its running fine. Usual rust spots. All original bar the back LX seats , door card missing on back door, drivers side and floor cover in the drivers well?

I have just started to get the rust spots sorted out and a full respray, to doing a full resto for the moment, just want to get the rust sorted and new paint.

I will post some photos once I get the hang of uploading . Would appreciate advise from members on the right way to keep this 42 as it should be.
Bye for now and thank you.

Some photos,more to follow

Welcome to MUD!

That's a nice 42, we have many threads outlining body work and rust abatement, try the search function. I'd start with the small stuff first, doors, bib, hood, etc. while you are driving and enjoying your cruiser, and focus on the re-spray when you remove all the rust spots. Your rig looks pretty good despite a few rust spots, it isn't too bad at all.

Here's an example of the rust here in the US.

Thank you for the welcome, sound advise.
I feel better already after looking at your post of rusted 40.

Will keep you updated
Thanks again

Nice Cruiser, have fun with it. Slán go foil.

I've been over there a bunch of times and the biggest enemy you'll have to stave off is rust. Nice to see a 40 in IRE!

I'd say that paint isn't that old ... and that there'll be more rust hidden under it.

As you replace the rusted bits with good metal, I'd recommend using a decent paint system (preparation & primer) like POR15 because the usual primers don't perform well in many areas on a 40-series which are rust-prone (such as the bottoms of the doors, beneath the windscreen rubber, between the windscreen frame and the tub, the bottom of the bib, the front edge of the bonnet, etc etc).

Welcome to ih8mud. She looks a great BJ42 and if you're like me, the work involved in keeping her that way (and improving her) will add to your enjoyment of her.

Nice truck that looks new compared with some of the stuff over here.[/QU

Thank you, its definitely been painted a few times, as Tom (lostmatbles) pointed out, tell tale paint on the wether stripping rubbers etc, and no doubt hiding a multitude of sins underneath . Original white as per plate (033)

Thank you Tom, good advice, I have been following your thread s/posts for quite some time now and probably influenced my decision to buy? Not going for a full tub off resto for the moment, just want to get the rust under control and get some paint on it, have replaced a few bits and pieces already such as the heater valve, steering idler box, and front diff seals. I have collected most of the weatherstripping (OEM) for the front and back doors, front windows, 1/4 window etc. The door mirrors are completely shot inside, can get OEM for the drivers side, cannot get the passenger side as OEM, plenty of aftermarket though. As I said previous;y, the back seats are missing as is the brown carpet, also back door drivers side card missing, assume there is no point in looking for these ? I have two bucket seats in brown leather and that will have to do for the moment.
I am going to keep it white, although there are different opinions on that on this forum?

Thanks again, no doubt I will be back shortly with many more questions

Thank you, agree, want to get it under control now before winter, although there is not much difference in rain fall here between summer and winter as you probably know from your visits:(

But when the sun does shine, the days are mightily, mightily fine.

Go rabh maith agat?

Tá fáilte romhat.

My Irish is very rudimentary. Lived there for a few years as a young man; go back to visit as often as I can. I'm an uilleann piper, so most of my Irish comes from tune names and the like.

Good stuff , you are probably very familiar with Doolin then, the spiritual home of the pipes? My dad was raised on Inis Mor, largest of the Aran Islands, and was a fluent speaker, sadly , I am not?
Keep in touch

And park it indoors when you're done with the bodywork. That truck looks like it's been parked outdoors in the rain for too long!
