That's exactly what I do. Much cheaper and I get the parts quicker.

wow so much cleaner....did you do yours yourself? how did it behave before you did it and after?? Glad you did it? Also, my muffler has holes in the bottom..what have you dont to your exhaust? Thinking about maybe removing the muffler and going straight pipe and leaving the CAT....
It is much cleaner and easier to work on.
To be honest, I dragged it out of a field not running. During my "restoration" I planned to desmog from the beginning so I never had it running with the smog gear. I did keep it all in a box in the garage. I tore the enginer down to the longblock and rebuilt the carburetor and desmogged as I reassembled with new or cleaner/resurfaced parts.
As for exhaust, mine was shot too, not quite rusted all the way out but broken hangers, etc. I went to a local shop and had them remake it from the manifold back. I eliminated the cat but kept that as well.

Wow, that looks awesome. Any performance difference after de smog?
