I own, (since new) a 1982 Pickup and just replaced the timing cover and set. All is well and have good oil pressure except when it sits for a few hours it takes a while for the oil pressure to build. I think it is a priming issue but it didn't happen until I did the repair. Did I leave something out? There is a spring and plunger under the 22 mm vertical bolt and that is installed correctly as far as I know. Could it be the copper washer not sealing? Anything you can tell me will be a great help! Thanks!

How are you determining you have low oil pressure? With the gague on the dash or with a mechanical gague?

The oil pump is a mechanical pump, if the motor is spinnin, it should be pumping. The gears inside the pump may be getting worn, how did they look when you had the cover off?

I would definitely look into your gauge.
As stated, it's a direct mechanical pump that turns the same revs as the engine, so either the pump is tired, or the gauge/sender is.
All OEM gauges run on electrical resistance, and it takes a while for it to build up, especially if the instrument is tired.
I would check it out with a meter and a load.

Also FWIW, my 83 takes some time to get the OP up on a cold crank, and that's just because the oil system needs to be pressurized before the sender can start feeding you information.

What brand of oil filters are you using? If it's a Fram, be aware they anti-drainback valves on those filters SUCK. What has to happen sometimes is the oil pump has to re-fill the filter before pressure can build up in the engine. The valve in OEM filters is much better at keeping the prime in the filter.

Did you replace the chain tensioner when you did the chain? Did you use a cheap one, or an OEM one?

The pressure is fine but it takes 10 seconds or so for the pressure to build after it sits for a few hours. The pump looked just fine when I had it out

10 seconds sounds about normal.

Pull the filter off after the motor has sat for a few hours. It may be draining the oil back in like KLF said.

I had the same problem with a cheap filter that we stocked at work. Pulled it off in the morning, and the filter was just about bone dry.
