It's interesting how they ran your gas setup through the top of your air cleaner. Mine has the factory air cleaner and a plenum between the top of the carb and the air filter neck which is about 3/4" tall. The gas gets sent in through there. When I bought it they had about 5' of hose to go from the regulator to that plenum - which was silly. I ran it much better and it is now only 18". That gave me better power and a much quicker throttle response.

The engine bay is looking great. Have you looked into filling a house LPG tank and then filling your rig from that? I know a guy in Colorado who did that with his Aussie FJ45 on gas and reckons he pays about 80 cents a gallon for the house gas he runs in his rig.

Yeah the top feed LPG on top of the air cleaner is odd, designed by impco, in fact they still sell similar models. Mine is from 1982.

I would love a home LPG tank but I live in a condo and the insurance policy won't allow me to put a tank onsite unless I bury it, and because I live on a river, I can't bury one without an EPA survey which it like 3 grand. Complete BS.

My ultimate goal is a snorkel, but I am thinking it is nearly impossible with this setup. I don't plan on driving in deep water but I would like to be able to if the need arose. I also wouldn't need to run on LPG in deep water, so I need to find a way of sealing the LPG vaporizer and get lots
of customer built parts to seal that weird air intake.

Josh, could you post some pix of your carb setup?

I'll post some pics soon

You are doing some great work! I don't really like the unpainted front, but that's just my personal opinion. I am super jealous of the triple wipers! I love them!

Mine has OEM power steering,(not a LX) yet, the pump it is mounted on the other side of the engine and is right hand drive with the alternator on the manifold side...I've seen another LX a few years back(except being diesel) ...same same all round ...colour and all... didn't see under the hood though

Here's how I put my snorkle in. The primary purpose of a snorkle is for cleaner, cooler air. I think you'd have to get a factory air cleaner to set up a snorkle.

That came out great but is that giant black cylinder your airbox? Is that factory? Could just be the photo angle but it looks gigantic! The snorkel pass through is nice and clean.

as a footnote...there are over 140 species of wasps in central Australia

LOL, I wish I kept a bucket full of Aussie mud and wasps so I could send it back to you down under folks. These frigin wasps are unreal. Their nests are quite impressive. I have a slight phobia of bees/wasps because in college I was sleeping and a giant wasp decided to go into my bed while I was sleeping and take a nap. I rolled over on it and it stung me in the ass about 20 times before I was able to get out of bed and literally punch that little bastard into wasp paste. When all was said and done, my bed frame was completely destroyed and my heart was beating about 200bpm for about 2 hours, partially from adrenaline, partially from a ton of stings. My left butt cheek was swollen and in severe pain for over a week, I couldn't sit down and that includes the rest room.

At this point, I don't thing there are any more spots for those wasp nests to hide, I have taken everything apart. There could be some in the frame somewhere but I have put all kinds of giant pipe cleaners in every hole I can find. I might have the only FJ40 with the INSIDE of the OEM radio cleaned with 409 and armor all'd. Yeah, there was a mud nest in there. I have done this to just about every part on the truck, taking me 5 times longer than a restoration should take because I am so OCD about wasps. Whoever I sell this to will never appreciate the level of cleaning resulting from wasp elimination. Can anyone else claim that they have cleaned every millimeter of every single wire, cable, nook and cranny in the dash? Ahahaha... wtf

You guys will not believe this (I wouldn't unless I had seen it), but I have removed at least 200 wasp bodies and over 20 pounds of aussie mud/sand packs from this rig. Every time I find a wasp corpse, I get freaked out and have to take a couple steps back like a little girl. Thank God no one can see me acting like such a wussy in my garage.

That is the factory non-smog air cleaner. The smog-equiped rigs from the US and from New South Wales had an air cleaner which sits on top of the valve cover. Yours likely had this kind and was from NSW as your power steering pump is on the left side of the engine on smog rigs in Oz. Non-smog power steering pump is on the right side of the engine and has the large cylindrical air cleaner like mine.

Some days I love the raw front, other days I hate it. I am leaning toward painting it slightly. Thanks for the feedback. I love the wipers too!

I've been slowly removing the interior from my 82' BJ42LX. I like it, but it isn't in the greatest of shape and I "thought" that I wanted more comfortable bucket seats. I may be changing my mind. Did you have those recovered?

I am looking at buying another 82 LX and am looking for all the bits that I need to repair it from its current state of brokeness.

Does anyone know if the brown stripe seat material is available and if so where from?

I have never been able to find the zebra stripe upholstery. If you go to a very good auto interiors place, they will get close, but it is not that rough texture that the OEM has.

Thanks for responding dspan.

That is where I had got to, but in an Ebay listing a few months back I saw a packet of new fabric inserts in one of the photos. The listing ended and I lost the sellers details.

If I manage to find them anywhere I will post it on mud, as I'm sure there are a few people looking for them.
