Afternoon Everyone -

I'm getting serious on buying the above. Rig has the 3B engine upgrade with a 5 speed. Currently its has drum brakes and manual steer. Seeking wisdom on upgrading to power steering and disc brakes. Thanks for any advice and suggestions.

Your rig your money your choice IMHO.

I'm a big guy, don't need power steering - I don't rock crawl or wade mud up to the wipers - more stuff to go wrong.
Disks " I don't even run a booster on my drums - big guy with leg power. Disks can be nice in the wet, like fording operations, maybe towing. I'm not ready to pay extra (yet).

Diesel - I don't have the knowledge or stuff to work on one. Yea they get better mileage but the fuel cost more - way harder to start when it twenty below zero. I loved my military multi-fueler deuce and half M35A2 with the 5 speed (waco) transmission

The 3B is a cool little engine.

Power steering is an overrated upgrade, I wheel a larger vehicle just fine without it (HJ47 Troopcarrier), its just more engine bay clutter and stuff to go wrong.

Front disc upgrade is low hanging fruit and straightforward. Well adjusted drum brakes are more than adequate though.

Various 3B resources available in my link below.

BJ41s were a JDM only vehicle. So it's a RHD vehicle. Harder to source RHD only parts in the US. What was the 3B and H55F replacement from a BJ42 or other cruiser? 60/70 series? BJ42 the shifter on the H55F will be in the correct location. Other shifter will be further back. Personally think 60 series and longer wheel base 70 series worked harder than the lighter weight BJ42.

The current owner pulled the 3B and 5 speed from an 85' Cruiser. Yes, it's RHD.

Thanks! Amazing info in the link. Still plenty to read through, but definitely a resource I will use. The current owner has pulled the EDIC off and replaced with a manual cable. I remember at one time someone posting for sale on here a solid state EDIC replacement. I have yet to find it.

Given you've had an engine change.. its possible the vehicle never had a working Fuel Control Relay and EDIC.. I do know that many of the South American BJ40s had a factory stop cable. Getting the vehicle to a point where you have a working Fuel Control Relay/EDIC Motor may not be easy, the loom may not have the correct wires/plugs.

Hendra Motors in Australia do a nice solid state Fuel Control Relay.

Me, I'd stick with a stop cable.

I'll have a factory RHD 40 series power steering box available in a few weeks. It'll be at @cruisermatt 's shop. Worked fine with no leaks in my 43, but I haven't put a lot of miles on it. I flushed the system and ran synthetic ATF. Nice and tight, no scary noises.

$500 plus shipping if you're keen. Shipping shouldn't be bad to NC.

Awesome ! What other components would I need for the install?

@cruisermatt is pulling it out of of mine. You could have whatever parts with it I don't use on my 105 steering conversion. I think all you would need is the power steering pump and possibly a different rag joint to go from your steering shaft to a power steering box (you could have my rag joint I believe, yes Matt?). This is a factory 40 series box, so it should be a bolt-in.

Given your 3B came out of a 70, I would bet it's got the pulley and brackets for a pump.

I believe @Scorch was selling a complete power steering pulley/drive kit for a 3B recently.

And yes we can box/ship @Chamba's setup to send to you. You will most likely have to shorten/sleeve your inner steering shaft approx 1". Or find a clean steering shaft and trade @Chamba for his since we are going to modify it anyways for his 105/80 setup.

Hi everyone. Yes, I do have a few sets of PS pulleys/brackets, AC brackets, etc. Let me know if I can help. Also, ( if I'm reading this thread correctly) it's going in a RHD? If that's so, you can grab the high pressure and return line from a local auto parts store. LHD cooler lines are way trickier lol.

Or just put your truck on a quick transport down i95 to Orlando and have CruiserMatt's do everything
:D

Yes sir, It would be going on a RHD. I haven't picked the rig up yet. Working through the details now

I can certainly recommend @cruisermatt . Great shop, good folks.

I've driven many 40s with and without power steering. While I agree they drive fine without it, they are infinitely more more pleasurable with it.

Wow.. super price.. it'd be worth 3 times that amount in Australia.

Funnily enough, I was thinking about bringing it back to Australia with me when we're back in July. I thought i could swap it for some of the parts I need.

I've got some mates looking for parts for me in Adelaide and the guys at Just Wrecking looking too. But if it can help out a Cruiser head here I'm happy to head back empty handed.
