I have a 1978 fj40 with a 12/78 build that has power steering and factory air conditioning…i am trying to figure out if my power steering is stock…i know in 1978 power steering was not an option on the 1978 models but being a 12/78 build could my 1978 actually be a 1979? My power steering box needs a rebuild and i am trying to figure out what I have under the hood…or could the power steering come from a toyota mini truck…thank you!

Saginaw parts for example

Other vendor's or threads might have good pic's of mini-truck conversion

That is a mini truck box. You can see where the mounting pedistal was cut and welded.
Better pics of pump mounting bracket?
Definietly not factory AC either.

Not a factory bracket or Land Cruiser pump either. Most likely Tercel or some sort of pick-up / 4runner unit. That is why it is rubbing your upper radiator hose so badly.

is the play in the box?
lots of other places can cause play in steering

PS pump is not in line or true with the belt from the A/C comp

I was also going to mention the welded bracket

When i drive down the road referencing a clock 12 is straight…my wheel plays from 10 to 2 while going straight…i have to turn alittle in either direction before i feel resistance

have someone rotate the steering wheel, engine off, just to get the free play out of the wheel
look at all steering components and look for movement before parts are actually moving,
steering box, center arm, all 6 tie rod ends,

also look at suspension bushings

jack front axle up and grab the tire at 3 and 9 and check for play

technically your rig is a model year 79, even tho it has all the 78 components. all rigs between Sept and Dec are model year 79 but basically a 78 rig and will be registered as a 1979
generally Sept is the start of a new model year, the true 79's started in Jan 79 with all the changes,

it has happened thru the years of Landcruisers
early 1970 had non boosted single circuit brakes, later 1970 had boosted dual circuit brakes
early 1974 had a 3 speed trans, later 1974 had a 4 speed trans
there are just more changes between early 1979 and later 1979
