Travis-

I know you leave Friday, but how is the tub mounted?

If you get down to the cities and have any issues, Matt has my cell.

Have a safe trip man.

Good luck!

Be sure to post up how the trip went. Hope all went well for you. Looking forward to seeing more!

i made it!!!!

haha alright guys....
the trip went relatively well. The first days was true northern weather...blowing snow/rain/icy roads blah blah blah. what should have taken 11 or 12 hrs took 14. I LOVE 4WD!!!! lots of people in the ditches haha but we just kept putzing along no problems.
The second day went pretty well also. One of the 2inch ratchet straps got cut along the way so i had to stop at a Home Depot and chose to buy two more. Then after stopping to help some poor pretty blond stuck on the side of the road I made it into TN and stopped there to party like a rock star with some old friends of mine.
That made the next days drive a little rough but we made it to GA.
Sorry that there arent any pics tonite...gotta fix my camera and pull the pics off of it but I am moving into a place right now and should be wrenching by the weekend?

BUT WHERE DO I START!?!?!

Hey thanks man...made it fine :)
Tub was mounted with just 4 of the 12 body mounts. I have to fit the rest. Photos will be coming.

Glad to hear you made it pal!

Now, get to work! :)

Hope that gauge cluster gets liberated form that old firewall and dash. It's too pretty to waste away in the snow.

Yeah we took the old firewall and brought it with (inst. cluster and all intact) on the trailer down to GA.

I finally have net at the house...the garage has Cruiser parts all over...stereo is cranking and hoping to have a workbench built today/tomorrow? Pics coming...time to get back to wrenching :D

So I finally said screw unpacking a few boxes and crap and decided to play on the cruiser this morning. I was cleaning up a few of the threads on the frame where the pins for the springs secure to the frame....

using a 8mm w/1.25 thread pitch tap cleaning out the paint and whatever else was there.
all of them went fine except the rear drivers side. the holes dont match up. pain in the @$$ since i had the pins in already haha. I dont really want to ream the plate for the pin out too much but i suppose thats the plan? here is a pic where you can see the misalignment.

took the dremeltool and 'grazed' off just a little from each bolt hole and the top of the flange that sets the plate.

not the best photographer...haha

micro jack...

One of the body mounts was tweaked from a rollover the PO had.
As you can see it was 'sunk' in...I took a bolt, washer, nut, and piece of scrap metal as a back plate to raise the metal straight again, a lot like a jack.

dash off old BJ...

Wanted to get started putting things on the new fiberglass dash from Gozzard so I had to disassemble the old in some form to transfer the holes and such.

Ground the welds on the side of the dash with an angle grinder. Took a drill on punched through the spot welds on the top of the dash. Taking off the bolts where the parking brake, throttle, and steering column sit along with punching the 4 welds in the glove box...(didnt see them right away, small headache haha) freed up the dash.

The quick wiring disconnects were freed and the dash was removed. Hoping to transfer some of the knobs and wiring to the new setup.

couple questions...

Not familiar with a few knobs and missing knobs...

In the first picture at the bottom and just to the left of the instrument cluster is a? It has a screen on the front? Inside there are two wires hooked up to what appears to be a spring? No idea...

Second picture....Above the hazzard light knob? what goes there? There were two wires pulled through and connected not sure what it was for though.
Next, below and slightly to the left of the 'warm pull' knob? I dont know what went there either. None of this was on he dash when I had it but would like to know what these holes were for.

Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated guys....

Later,

I had the same problem with my spring pins

I like the way you straightened that mount, well thought out. Looks good man, keep up the great work!

This evening I pulled the fiberglass dash off the firewall in order to put the knobs on and swap out the FJ instrument cluster for the BJ. Pulled all the controls off the old dash. Only had trouble with one of the face nuts. I didnt have the correct tool for the job so we had to improvise a little with a needle nose and . It worked haha.

I wanted to make sure the knobs were all in line. Marked my lines and center points. I used a dremel tool with a cutting bit, 1/4inch sanding bit and a drill to make the holes. For the flat spots I had a small file that worked really well.

few more...bad focus on the face nut but it has the two small holes that are used to turn the nut

last one...knobs in place..

i have never claimed to be the smartest guy...the question i had about the top hole is actually used to run wire to the dash pad? just guessing but it seems to fit.

I still dont know what the hole is for just to the left of the ash tray...

Travis,

The item below & to the right of the headlight switch is the "Glow-Plug Indicator Light". The two wires (in the back) connect to the 'spring-looking' thing, and when you're applying current to the glowplugs, the springs glows orange/red hot to tell you that the glow plugs are hot enough. On my truck, the glow plug indicator is powered from the glowplug relay. It should be similar on your '78 BJ.
It does take 5-20 seconds for the coil to glow, depending on battery condition & temperature.

The other hole on the dash (below the warm/pull knob) is empty on my '81 BJ-42. The hole is blanked off with a black plastic plug. I assumed it was for A/C (if the truck came equiped with it), but could be wrong?!?!?

Your thread looks like a flash-back to my work during the last four years. You're making good progress, and your attention to detail is really good to see in this day-and-age of 'quickies'. Good on 'ya!

Cheers,
Steve

Steve thanks for the help. It was my guess but looked a little strange. I thought it might have a glass or plastic cover of the face of it but apparently none of them did. Glad to hear there wasnt anything for that empty space also. I looked for wires and everything else but was a little confused that there be this space in the dash. Thanks again.

few pics...

Alright guys...been a couple days since I posted a pic.
Did some work today on the cruiser along with a lot of research. The 24V system is a little different and I wanted to do some planning for any changes that might affect the process. For example, a Solar Converter to run 12V applications like a radio, gps, cigarette lighter...

Anyway, I changed out the 12v blower for the 24 off the BJ along with pulling most everything off the old firewall. I bolted the front heater down and hooked up the ducting as you can see in the picture. I had to clean up and make a bunch of holes in the fiberglass. Used the dremel with the 1/2inch sanding wheel. I also took an old glove box and installed that. Everything is installed with stainless steal.

I had to chase a few wires and still havent figured out what two are for haha. Guess I missed them with the tape and label. I might have to post that in the Diesel and 24V page?

I pulled the old brake booster/master cylinder, the clutch cylinder and the pedal support brackets. I took out the wiring harness and semi-cleaned it up. Installed the glow plug relay, starter relay, seatbelt warning, and dimmer relay. I had to relocate the seatbelt warning to the left as there wasnt room in the original location on the fiberglass tub. I still have yet to figure out how to 'hang' the wiring bundle from the top of the firewall behind the dash...open for input on that.

I thinking of making something similar to the metal tub. Metal 'clips' coated in rubber that are epoxied to the fiberglass? Not completely set on the idea...

I tossed the wiring harness in hooked up the relays, heater ducting and installed the dash to see how it all would fit. I was happy with how it all sits. Take a look.
