I work off and on at a boat shop, and man, I hate drilling in fiber glass, but what's worse is running screws in to it. If you screw anything directly into that tub, go slow and be gentel. They like to break off, especially stainless. A little silicon seems to help. At least spit on them.

Little spit goes long way?...

Hey thanks for the advice....I will keep that in mind. I am really impressed with these tubs. Most of the hardware is fastenend by drilling through the tub and using a bolt, washer and nut. I havent tried screwing or tapping anything into the tub....yet.

Does anybody know where to get the little metal clips to hold the dash pads in?

Windshield frame....

I did pull apart the windshield frame. There is a 12V motor and I need to get my hands on a 24V? That goes for the Rear Heater motor as well. The BJ didnt have either on it when I got it. So I need to find and purchase those :D

Bodymounts...

There is a need to make your own mounts with a Gozzard tub due to differences in the fiberglass. I have 2" polyurethane stock that I will be using to make the body mounts.

Here is a picture or two of what was under there to get me down to GA. Tomorrow I hope to level the tub giving approximately 1/2" gap between the tub and the back of the frame. Same goes for the side step frame and tub. I need to setup the drill press and saw to get this done. It appears there is a slight bend in the aft left mount location giving two surfaces that aren't parallel (frame and tub). It might not be too significant where I want to start bending metal?

Setup the saw...

A lot of today was spent changing the locks on the house. Haha Interesting weekend here....waking up at 3 in the morning with visitors that you werent expecting ;)

I setup my vertical/horzontal bandsaw that I had purchased. Cranked it up and cut a few of the body mounts tonite out of the polyurethane stock . Worked awesome.....Face them with the belt sander tomorrow and drill the holes tomorrow for installation. Only a couple pics sorry...

Catch up...

Here is a couple pics to update whats been going on here....

Making the body mounts hasnt been too difficult but each is a custom fit. Taking that polyurethane rod, cutting it with the horizontal/vertical bandsaw, facing with the sander and drilling with the drill press.

Waiting for a sander to get the underside of the tub faced. Should get it today maybe sand tomorrow?

I went to the hardwares store to grab some Grade 8 bolts to secure the tub BUT apparently stores in the area find Grade 8 a hastle 'they get mixed in with the metric and stainless so we dont want to carry them anymore'? WTF?!? I went to another store and same deal. Is this odd?

At any rate, right now I have some regular grade 5 bolts holding the tub in place.

Work calls...later

looks good, i like the body mounts idea, where did you get that poly stock? how much did you pay for it... your build is nice and clean, pretty well thought out too.

hey, about the wipers- couldnt you put a resistor to the power for the wiper to cut down to 12 volts from 24? Seems easier than finding another set of wipers.

looks good.

Inspriation

Great thread! I've been watching my 'curb cruiser' every morning when I head out to work since before christmas here in Victoria. Have some gremlins to exorcise before I can start enjoying the life of the cruiser. I bought my 79 BJ 40 last June, but due to time, lack of driveway/garage space have not been able to get into it as I would like. Your work in the great outdoors, and pictures+tales have definately been an inspiration. I will be learing about my EDIC to hopefully solve my chatter problem this weekend. With any luck (something I have been short of with this truck) start enjoying this truck that has only seen one day of driving since I took ownership from the PO (I hate to say it but in June 2005). Long story short, keep up the good work and thanks for giving the visual to get us newbies back in the game. By the way, why did you go fiberglass tub vs. aluminum?

Thanks again, and I look forward to the rest of the tale.

Cheers~

Polyurethane round stock....

The polyurethane stock came from MSC. For 36 inches the price is about $125 but that will make your mounts and leave a little for screw up. A buddy of mine, Matt, used this on his FJ with out any problems. Pretty cool....

I think Matt rubbed off on him or something. Yes this is looking very nice!!

HAHA!!! I would consider myself lucky if ANY of Matt's skills passed this way. He usually has an answer or idea when I have a question. Maybe with some time I will get there ;)

I think you are right, I probably could and there are a few resistors in the wiring. I am trying to figure out what they provide to MAYBE they already give power to the wipermotor? Working on that right now...good idea thanks.

Get after it :)

I hope you can get that rig running!! It was suggested to me to post this as it goes. Helps me out and hopefully someone else...time is the big thing and just getting your hands dirty.

To answer your question about fiberglass vs. aluminum

I went with the fiberglass first because it wouldnt rust (not that aluminum would) but that was the first reason. I had also seen the product firsthand and was VERY impressed. Its extremely tough, and well put together. Easy to work with as well. I also got a good deal on a tub that somebody else had bought but didnt get much done on. so it was a good pickup for me.

Thanks,
Travis
