Is it the starter clearance that's a problem for that steering, or something else?

Looks good, if I ever got that far down, i would NEVER get it back together! I cant wait to see this built back up.

Been watching Jeff Zepp for like 5 years now...

Been told you can hit the tub with a 5 pound ball peen hammer as hard as you can and will not damage the tub???

LOL!!! Havent heard that yet but I dont think I will try....well maybe....

It looks great so far.

I was wondering if you were going to spray the inside of the frame? It looks like there is still some bare metal in there.

Oh thats umm an optical illusion...yeah thats it...no actually after seeing that picture I did check and see if that spot was really bare but it wasnt so not sure what to tell ya.

are you going with the ps setup on this? if so, would'nt it have been a good idea to weld the plates on before you painted the frame?

Just guessing George, the BJ has two factory battery trays and you would have to either move one tray completely on the drivers side or hack a big chuck of it out to run Sagina.

If he goes somewhat factory he will maintain his tray setup.

Just a guess.

George, Rob is right....too much stuff in the way...I was really hoping to get rid of the Rube Goldberg steering system and go with the Saginaw...and thought it would work but after looking at it, I think it would take too much time and effort for the gains.

LOL I sure hope it doesnt take that long...

blast n paint....

Today the battery supports, cross member, skid plate, u-bolts, and most importantly axels... were blasted and some of it painted...I was really happy with how it turned out. Shiny and black and should be tough.

Even got a few of Matts parts blasted. Had to give a little, cant just keep taking...;)

After the painting was done and cleaned up we ran out and did a little work on his LV.

I still need to figure out what all I should do with the engine. So far I am thinking of just loading it onto a trailer bringing it to the carwash and getting as many chemicals as I can to clean it up. Might spray a coat of paint on it?

look what came in today!!!!

I GOT MOTOR MOUNTS!!!!!

Thanks to cruiserdan I have motor mounts for the BJ. From what I understand one of them was the only one in the states? Lucky for me....
Gonna need it to put the engine back in since one of the forward ones blew apart on the take out. Here is a picture of them.

ran into a small issue today....

Actually today had its bumps....as does learning I suppose but I dont like when things dont go as I want them to. haha But overall another good day....

I went out to the Parts FJ to grab the polyurethane bushings for the springs and shackles...well the bushing took a little effort to get out of the existing mounts (the bushing are brand new) well the FJ had different size diameter for one of the bushings leaving me short on the correct size. You can see in the picture the correct size is on the left while the ones on the right were too large.

I wasnt going to be able to get new ones in time (gotta pack it up and move it all end of next week) so lucky for me the ever so reliable Matt had a couple yellow ones that will get me by till I can replace them. Pretty cool of Matt.

Touched up on some sandblasting today as well....the bottom piece of sheetmetal that goes under the radiator got fixed (cracked so my brother welded it)

Also had an issue painting not that you would notice looking at the parts now but it appeared the primer didnt want to adhere to the metal. Like it was trying to blotch and it seemed thinner than what I had used previous. Only reason I am putting this out there is because I am new to painting and its learning.

I am thinking that I had either put too much thinner in it?

The DX 330 to take the oily spots from where people touched off the metal hadnt completely flashed off

The DP90 wasnt completely mixed (I had just opened a new can but did stir it)

Something wrong with the primer...(very unlikely since I am new at this and they have been mixing paint for years haha)

But overall it turned out well in the end...just wanted to share....

Also got a few more parts for Matt blasted and painted :D

thats what i did, except my engine was apart. brought the block, head, oil pan, skid plate and some other small things, so the manual carwash, and brought about four cans of brake clean. worked well :D

got the engine washed....to paint or not...

Well...I got the engine washed.
Today we spent a little time working on washing the engine up but thats about all we got done today... I still dont know if I want to paint any of the engine at this time or wait till I get moved into my place in GA.

To do any painting I feel I should tear off some of the components and make it look nice. I only have a few days and hope to start putting things back together in the next few days.

Washing the engine made it look 110% better than it did...I used 2" Pipe plugs from the local hardware store to plug the transmission and carb. Worked great. Other than that I used some Castrol SuperClean and a few brushes along with SouthSide Carwash to clean 'er up.

Pretty happy with how it turned out...

Here are a few pics...you can see what the engine looked like before in a few pics prior to this thread...

Nice work, Looks like you didn't have too many rust issues with the chassis components, keep the pics coming.

Hy Heavy nice project this might sound like a newbee questions what kind of 4speed came with the BJ40 and do you have any plans to go to change the trans to a 5speed dont know if that is possable what about a turbo on the B ? even if you keep it mostly stock its a cool rig good luck ! and more pic !:D

just a thought... would a scout style PS box fit better? (or fj60, or astrovan... i here the astro box is very compact)
nice work! carl

It Has Wheels!!!

Today I got caught up with a few things and didnt start till later in the day. Had to run to the harware store and grab a few things that my buddy had shipped in for me.

I have new stainless steel hardware for the cruiser...a nice assortment to keep this cruiser from rusting out?
Also loaded up a 2-ton hoist :D I LOVE IT!!!

So after that the axles, springs, and battery supports were put back on the BJ. I was really happy to finally be bolting things back together. Need to get some new nuts and washers for the shackles tomorrow and that will be set.

No you are right. Things were better than I could have expected. There was some pitting in the rear quarters but still the frame was very nice....

Poser is right on this...H41. No plans at this time to swap that out. If and when that B goes I was thinking of tossing a 3B into it. TURBOs are cool :D but that is far down the road for this rig right now...
