Hello all, Thought I'd post to get myself motivated to start working and of course ask some advice. A couple years ago I found an old FJ45 in a farmers field. It was "one of those" stories. It hadn't been registered for over 20 years and that would support the odometer reading of less than 24k miles. We were able to get it running and driving and more recently I have spent even more time on it. We've done the basic tune up stuff and have also carb kitted it. Here is a couple pics of it. I dont have any recent ones but not much has changed...

So the basic plan isn't to agressive. I want to tear id down and clean everything up. Address any big issues like leaks and creaks. Fix the body work which isn't to bad for its age. The box needs on support underneath but otherwise it very solid. The tailgate is bent a touch but not bad. I think I'll buy new fenders since they have the typical rust. Bib and cowl are good. Winshiled frame need some work. Rood has some dents but they should come out.

The interior will also take some work. The seat is shot...dash cracked. Other than that not to bad.

Truck is running like a top. It has an exhaust leak but doesn't seem to use much oil. I havn't put many miles on it yet but am hoping to soon before I rip it apart.

As I mentioned before my build isn't to crazy
-Reseal motor
-Get rid of points ignition
-Install Header and new exhasut
-Get room for 33" tires
-Check seals on tranny and xfer
-Get all brakes functioning
-Protect all undercarrige with some sort of paint
-Derust as much as I can and protect.

Essentially I want this to be a daily driveable 45 that true to its heritage. I might throw a rear locker in just for fun. It won't be wheeled much but may see a little use. For now I have a couple basic questions. I've been searching and I know its my firend.

1. What are the best upgrades I can do to a 45 of this age
2. Whats the best way for rust removal? electrolysis, Sand blast, wire wheel.
3. Once I strip anything I want to protect it...epoxy primer is the best i here. Is there a spray bomb version or do I need to do larger batches.
4. If I leave the truck overnight I need to crank it for 1-2mins to start it. No fuel in the bowl. Where do I look to fix that?

I think that will be all for now. I do have some stuff done. Winch bumper, rear bumper, disc conversion up front, and a new fuel pump.

Thnaks,

I always pump the gas pedal at least 5-10 times before I start it. If it is cold I also choke it. About the only time I don't choke it is on hot summer days. Unless it is very cold out, I push the choke in about half way as soon as it fires up.

Nice find by the way. And welcome to the club.

You should be able to put 33"s under that already as she sits. Nice truck, and it's my fave color too!

I've got a set of Cooper Discovery ST's on my '45 and they're advertised at something like 33.2" tall in the specs. The size is 255/85-16 and I've got them on 8" wide aluminum rims.

They fit great and look even better. The tread is under the body and a little bit of sidewall sticks out. I don't think they'd have fit very well w/out having replaced my suspension though and the truck currently rides on 2-1/2" OME Dakar springs.

What size tires and rims are on yours now?

4. If I leave the truck overnight I need to crank it for 1-2mins to start it. No fuel in the bowl. Where do I look to fix that?

After turning off the engine removed the top cover of the airfilter assy and check if the carb is leaking into the intake. If it's leaking you may want to keep an eye on the oil/replace. Clean out the carb comes first to mind but and it's probably best to have a carb kit on hand in case your break a gasket or seal. I bought several carb kits from JimC in past and rebuilt my carbs with no problems. Since it's new to you and had been sitting out in the field for 20 years, your best best is rebuild your carb or have JimC or someone on this board rebuild for you.
You can also use the search function in the fj40 section since there are more of them around. Good Luck.
