Up for sale is my 1976 FJ40. Located in Eastern NC, about 45 minutes NE of Jacksonville.
For the purists out there, shield your eyes.
Time to trim the stable down to free up $$$$$ and garage space for new projects to work on. I’ve had it for about 5 years and have had a great time restoring it and expanding my mechanical skills. It has some of the looks of an older 40 with the mechanical benefits of a newer one.
Originally started out as a hard top, but an altercation with a tree bent and cracked the fiberglass cap, I decided to go soft top. I opted with the vinyl versus the canvas top, and it has held up great thus far. The OEM soft doors turned out real nice and keeps that old school look.
Starts and runs fine, but the fuel drains out of the carb if you don’t drive it for a week or two and you have to hit it with starter fluid every now and then to get the bowl primed. Steering is tight and straight, a little wobble at 45-50ish but no death wobble.
The only known mechanical issue aside from the having to prime the fuel system now and then is an oil leak at the front main seal. I had to replace the oil pan due to the skid plate rusting out and oil leaking statically from there, and was pretty sure that was the source of the leak. Turns out additionally it was the seal behind the mail pulley on the timing gear cover. It doesn’t leak statically, only when the truck is running. Good thing is the underside of the truck is well lubricated and probably won’t rust, ever
I do have a seal and Speedi sleeve for the crankshaft, I just haven’t had the time to pull the front end apart again to replace it.
Body wise, no rust on the body as most of it is aluminum, and only a little surface rust on the frame underside that I have been stripping, treating and coating as it pops up. When I leaned into the tree that cracked my hard top, the drivers side also has scrapes in the paint down the side and a couple of small dents in the aqula tub in the rear quarter panel. There is also a crack in the paint and primer right behind the fender where the front cowl flexed a little. The PO also drilled a hole to fit some goofy aftermarked antenna that was falling off when I bought the truck, I relaced it with a Firestik antenna mount which covers up the carnage the PO left behind. Also, the PO tried to do some type of gauge modification on the dash, do there was a big boondoggle hole between the gauge cluter and all the dash knobs. I had a piece of stainless steel painted and now completely covers the abortion of a hole. And there are the usual scratches and chips as this truck is not a garage queen.
The interior is really nice, it is fully carpeted with a set of shane’s seat covers that really brought the interior back to life. The DS seat has the extension bracket installed, so you tall guys will have a little extra room. The jump seats were fully restored with new hardware and canvas straps. There also is herculiner all thru the interior under the carpet. I put in all aftermarket Autometer gauges with a custom stainless cluster and matching glove box door. With the Sag PS, I also s***canned the 16” behemoth steering wheel and got a Grant 14” wheel.

It has a lot of great upgrades and I definitely in the negative when it comes to what I am looking to get. But, I know that it’s tough times for selling toys and is a buyers market. That being said, I’m not going to give it away either, I am under no pressure to sell, other than the wife complaining that I have too many projects going. I have money and plenty of cruisers to occupy my time, so please no trades or low ball offers.
Looking for $9500 firm.
