Whoah! Is that really an OEM Toyota trayback?!?! I like the traybacks, but I'm a Toyota snob, so perhaps there's a solution for me after all?

Very nice truck, BTW. I'm 90% sure that you can get the turn signals like the brochure still from Toyota.

Dan

Hi Dan,
I'd bet that the trayback was fitted in Australia by the dealer. They still do that today with current model Landcruiser utes, although I'm not sure if the Toyota genuine trays are from the factory or not. Plenty of utes are sold as a 'cab chassis' which means they come with no tray at all and the purchaser sources their own. You do sometimes see new vehicles driving down the road with just a bare frame hanging out the back, on their way to a fabricator. See here: Toyota LC70: Tray Bodies

I've just spent the morning on the phone to various Toyota dealers and most of them are unable to get parts for these old trucks (or can't be bothered ) . Yet I look at US sites or even US Ebay and there are heaps of OEM parts :bang:.

Anyway, I've found everything I need now except tailgate latches. I'm trying a few dealers for Toyota Dyna latches which are aparently the same. Anyone willing to sell me some latches? CCOT is out of stock for several months and mine are so worn the tailgate falls open.

G'day Henry,

- Regarding the window rubbers and felts, try a company called 'JustService' 213 Chesterville Road, Moorabbin Vic. Tel 03 95321200. I haven't actually dealt with these guys myself, but I have been told that they stock rare Toyota parts.

FYI, I called them this morning and they don't do anything older than an 80 series.

Hi

The original turn signals come up on ebay from time to time, the gear shift boots are on ebay, in one of the many stores like roodogs4wd etc. I think don kyatt have them also.

That model should have the splits with the hub cap tabs, my 75' did. I fitted later model rims to it no worries at all. (75 series spits in fact).
You would be flat out finding original wheels with tabs, but again they come up on ebay from time to time.

Toyota Dealers down this way are a PITA to deal with, I used to work for one for 6 years! Unless its off a brand new 200 series they dont give a crap. I know for a fact that Canberra Toyota, and the Dealer in my home town have piles of Split rims, Bumpers, and heaps of cool OE stuff that they just couldnt be stuffed looking for if you make an enquiry. One day it will all go to the tip.
Have you tried old mate at Flynns Wreckers? Surely he has the odd cruiser sitting around?

Hi

Ha, funny you should mention Flynns. I called them last week thinking they MUST have a few cruisers amongst the acres of cars... and you'd have thought I'd asked for a Rolls Royce! If you can believe the bloke on the phone, they haven't got a single FJ45:eek:.

As you say, it is surprising how few people are prepared to help, and how much research, phone calls and running around is required. There's no doubt us Aussies are bloody hopeless at customer service and general organisation.

So you reckon any Landcruiser or Hilux 6 stud split rim will be OK? Do you have front disc brakes?

Sorry, forgot about the disc brake part. Mine had drums, although the wheels were off a disc brake model. Not sure if the earlier hub caps rims will fit with discs sorry. Hilux will fit, but I think they are smaller Dia. I saw a set on a 55 Recently, and it looked sh!thouse. They seemed too small.

For all the cruisers here, its suprising how little access to parts we have, The US get all the cool repro stuff, and containers of our parts. Postage from the US is madness though.

Ill keep my eye out for you. Put up a list of what you need, im always hunting for cruiser parts, ill PM you if I find anything.

What sort of cars are lurking around in the paddocks out your way? im always looking for old holdens and cruisers

Dave

Hilux split rims are smaller than Landcruiser items I am sure. I do have a couple of split rims off I think an 80 series and they have a different offset to the 45/60/75 splitties (makes the track too narrow).

As for dealers, the best way is to arm yourself with the relevant part numbers (I use toyodiy) then pepper them with these numbers, they seem to not mind doing that.

Hi all,
Just a small amount of progress since the last post. I've sourced new window and door rubbers, new gear lever & transfer lever boots. I just need to find the 3M weatherstrip adhesive for the door seals (I want to do them properly the first time).

I also added some driving lights to the front... It's not a perfect way to mount them, but it will do for now.

I came across this jack, which is an original Toyota item, probably from the FJ45 era. It fits perfectly in the clamp under the passenger seat. I'll probably cut the handle down (it's too long for the cab brackets) and grind a new square face to take the handle.

I'll start my search for split rims soon.

Hi guys,
Just a quick question re door seals.
The original door seals look like this:

I ordered new seals from www.rarespares.net.au and they look like this:

The new ones are a generic profile and do not have the complex molded shapes.
Is this how all of the replacement door seals are? Looking at the US sites (CCOT, SOR) I'm thinking maybe nobody makes the more complex shapes. Shall I go ahead and use the new ones?

Thanks again,
Henry.

PM sent Henry

I like the Driving light location, its exactly how I mounted mine also

The 45 is coming along well.

I've only ever seen maybe 5 45/47s with the pickup bed, someone in Rockhampton here has one on their HJ 47, I guess the rust is being cut out of it going by the primer on it. I'd love to have a pickup bed, but they're not the most practical things around, that's why the dropside tray rules here in Australia.
Indeed very true!
