I saw this listing online for a 1974 FJ40. It is actually a factory soft top model and looks fairly clean for $8,000.00 o.b.o.

I figured someone close might want to buy it.

front had alot of surface rust and i didnt check frame vin. i just verified both pillar and firewall vins had orig rivets vs messed with. Based on the condition from what i was seeing i was pretty certain an owner who solved interior mat filth by throwing some harley mats over the mud vs cleaning wasnt about to swap out a frame.

Many thanks for your trip and great report. Price seems a bit high based on your description but not obscenely so. It's always tough to negotiate with a seller who isn't really motivated to sell.

yeah it seemed like they are in no rush to test the waters and see how much they can get. I would imagine just because they recently dropped to $8k that it might be a few months of getting bashed with $5-6k offers before they consider the next leg down.

I tried to ballpark prices for them on all the missing/needed items like bows / top/ doors/mirrors/ steelies/ axle rebuild/ carb rebuild/ drivetrain seals etc etc are looking like a good $3-4k+ real fast. I believe sellers often see prices on cruisers that already have most of that sorted out-and they think their leaky basket case should fetch the same top dollar just because it starts and drives.

In the end this will find its sweet spot price and hopefully it goes to someone not wanting to slap in a 289chebby-hardtop and No Fear stickers.

I may be a bit jaded on pricing as my last two near misses of FSTs which included bows and slightly less rust were in the $3k-$4k range. Craigslist posting : 2cnd called in first hour of posting and of course they were sold to first caller at sub $3500.

so deals are out there and generally not in pricey SF , LA or other high priced Cruiser markets. generally i find in those off-markets......the FST's can be priced similar to beater hardtops and especially good deals if not running which is a far better scenario to look for than ones at "beater price " due to rust imho.
