i’m having a problem locking and unlocking the drivers side door. The door lock key will engage and lock the door but I can not take the key out of the lock until I unlock the door . So I put the key in and I turn it to the left and the door locks not allowing me to remove the key, so when I turn back to the right to the starting position it unlocks the door and allows me to remove the key. Is the lock key cylinder the issue? Need to buy a new one? Or an adjustment needed? Thanks everyone

Did it ever work correctly? Is it and old style door or the new style. I have a 76 top on my 72. I almost never lock the doors, its waste of time - coat hanger threw the kick vent or the door seal. When I do lock the doors I use the inside handle/tab an unlock the door with the key.

I bought this FJ40 about a year ago and never tried locking it until recently.

I’m not sure if it ever worked correctly, I’ve owned it for less than a year. It’s an original 1974 FJ. I just noticed the tab to lock and unlock the door from the inside is missing and replaced with a nut.

That appears to be the old style doors, and I'm not familiar with them.

I'm sure in the manual there would be a procedure to adjust the mechanism. Does the other door lock work, if it does you might be able to compare the settings. Maybe some part in the guts got index 180 out and isn't allowing the key to withdraw when locked.

Thank you for the info, I’ll dive into the manual. Hopefully an adjustment is all that's needed.

The square shaft that runs through the door to the inner lock is 90 degrees out of rotation. Pull the inside lock plate to access the shaft and rotate it 90 degrees. If that doesn’t work, try 90 degrees in the opposite direction.😉
