1973 FJ40 Project
This is a project for someone with more time/energy than I have.
This project was inherited mostly as it sits know. There are a lot of parts here, and more parts that are needed to put this thing together.
There will be a bunch of fab work that will be needed in order to get this thing running correctly. I will try to be as conclusive as possible of whats all here, and what all is still needed, but there are some unknowns in the details. I acquired the project without all the info and specs, and will detail everything I know and don’t know as much as possible. With that said, this could be a killer project for someone to keep this old cruiser alive.
Here are the details:
1973 FJ40, title in hand
Mileage unknown
Suspension was switched over to a 4 link rear, 3 link front. From the looks of it, it’s a decent setup, at best. Have not got to a point that I have confirmed that the links and mounts are in the correct placements. There is a decent chance these may need to be reworked. As you can see from the pictures, the front is skyhigh. Even with drivetrain mocked up and in place, the front only drops a couple of inches. Links definitely need to be reworked, and possible the tab mount locations on the axle.
Axles are stock 40 axle housings, with the way it looks now, they may need a cut and turn to get the pinon angle correct. But this has not been verified with any measurements. Just from initial assessment.
Differentials were communicated to me that they are 4.56 gears
Shafts were upgraded to Longfields, per the previous owner. Neither the gearing or shafts have been confirmed. I have not opened up the differential, or pulled the shafts to confirm any specs. This was all info from the previous owner.
New ARB lockers in front and rear, installed.
Shocks are brand new KING Coilovers. I believe from how this thing is sitting with the current link setup, the fronts may be too tall.
Motor is a “built” LS 6.0, LQ4. New and fresh rebuild, new coil packs, upgraded cam and crank (I do not know the specifics of those), New Holley Sniper intake, in the box. Comes with all new wiring, computer and control components
Transmission is a fresh rebuild 4L60E, transfer case is a fresh rebuild NP231C with a passenger side drop. It looks like this will need a slip yoke eliminator to make it fit right. The shifter that is currently installed may be incorrect for the 4L60E. I do not have a different one.
I have an alternator, harmonic balancer, other miscellaneous motor parts that are not installed.
Motor, transmission and Tcase are all assembled.
Frame has been cleaned up, freshly painted with POR15
Wheels are TrailReady Beadlocks, 17”, qty 5. Brand new
Tires are Nitto Trail Grappler M/T, 37x12.50r17, brand new, qty 5
The body, doors, hood, top, rear hatch are all in decent shape. It looks like any of the major rust that was there was cut out and repaired. There is some rust coming through on the rear sill and corners. It’s not perfect, and I don’t know what all is hiding underneath. The paint work is not the best, the patches are not the cleanest, but there doesn’t seem to be any rot or spreading cancer. The fiberglass top has a sunroof cut into it. Glass is all intact. Plenty of scratches and rough paint places on the body as seen.
The interior was all redone. Custom gauges, sound system with all new speakers and sub, rhinolined inside and complete underside of the tub. Not sure what specific brand of lining was used. New Corbeau Racing seats in front, small new jump seats in back. New 4 point harness seatbelts in front. New Autometer Phantom II gauges. Has a full rollcage, but it is only tied into the tub body. No frame mounting points for the cage.
It has boxes of new offroad lights, and other random parts, new in boxes
Has rear tire mount bumper and jerry can carrier installed. Not sure of the brand.
Has full 6.0 wiring harness from Sniper, with computer.
Has AntiRock arms in front and back, installed.
Has new ARB compressor
Front ARB bumper with PIAA offroad lights
Fuel cell is there as well, not sure of capacity.
The parts that are missing as far as I can determine: Needs front and rear driveshafts. Needs brake calipers and lines. Fronts are stock Toyota disc, rear Toyota drums. It does have a stock Toyota brake booster and master cylinder. Needs exhaust manifolds/headers for the motor, and full exhaust. Needs motor mounts fabbed. Needs finished steering links. Needs full hub rebuild. There are some hub parts, but I don’t think all the parts are there. Going to need a lot of miscellaneous hardware, weather stripping, marker lights. Will need power steering components. Looks like there is an old Toyota manual steering box. There is an old power steering pump from an older Chevy motor included. There are no new battery or ignition components.
There is a large box of all the original LS hardware, wiring, intake, computer, and miscellaneous parts included. There may be some of the older LS motor ignition parts in the crate, but I have not verified that.
In my attempt to explain all that is there, I am sure I am missing a few things. I am happy to answer any and all questions, or send any more specific pics as necessary.
There are a ton of new, high end parts that went into this build. Most everything is there to start putting it all back together. The suspension needs to be worked on and dialed in, but the bones a fantastic build are all there.
Not looking to part out.
Located in SLC Utah
Price is $18,000
